Appropriations

Economics Glossary – Malone Global University

Definition

Appropriations are legally authorized allocations of government funds to specific programs, departments, or projects. These funds are approved by the legislature to ensure that government spending is controlled and directed toward intended purposes.

Why It Matters

Appropriations are central to public finance and budgeting because they determine how government resources are spent. They provide accountability, prevent overspending, and ensure that funds are used according to legislative priorities.

Example

Congress passes a bill that allocates $500 million for education programs. This appropriation legally allows the Department of Education to spend that amount on schools, teacher training, and educational resources. The funds cannot be used for unrelated purposes.
