Central Bank

Economics Glossary – Malone Global University

Definition

Central Bank is the main monetary authority of a country or region, responsible for regulating the money supply, setting interest rates, issuing currency, and maintaining financial stability. Examples include the Federal Reserve in the U.S. and the European Central Bank in the Eurozone.

Why It Matters

Central banks play a crucial role in controlling inflation, supporting economic growth, and ensuring confidence in the financial system. By adjusting interest rates and influencing credit availability, they help stabilize the economy and prevent financial crises.

Example

If inflation rises too quickly, a central bank may increase interest rates to reduce borrowing and spending, thereby slowing price growth. Conversely, during a recession, it may lower rates and purchase government securities to inject liquidity into the economy.
