Chapter 7 Bankruptcy

Economics Glossary – Malone Global University

Definition

Chapter 7 bankruptcy is a legal process in which a debtor’s non-exempt assets are sold (liquidated) to repay creditors, and most remaining unsecured debts are discharged, allowing the debtor to make a financial fresh start.

Why It Matters

Chapter 7 bankruptcy plays an important role in modern credit markets. It reduces the long-term burden of unpayable debt, allows households to reset financially, and helps lenders price risk into interest rates. Bankruptcy laws influence borrowing behavior, credit availability, and the stability of the financial system.

Example

If an individual loses their job and accumulates large credit card and medical debts they cannot repay, they may file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. A trustee may sell certain non-protected assets to repay creditors, and remaining eligible debts are eliminated.
