Real Vs Nominal Gdp

Economics Glossary – Malone Global University

Definition

Real GDP measures production using constant prices to remove the effect of inflation, while nominal GDP measures production using current prices, mixing changes in output and prices.

Why It Matters

The comparison shows whether the economy is truly producing more goods and services or if values are rising mainly because prices increased.

Example

Nominal GDP rises 8% but inflation is 5%; real GDP rose about 3%.
