Definition
Securitization is the process of bundling loans or other financial assets into a pool and converting them into tradable securities that investors can buy, such as mortgage-backed securities.
Why It Matters
It can expand credit by moving loans off lenders’ balance sheets, but it can also spread risk and create instability if underwriting is weak.
Example
A bank bundles home mortgages into securities sold to investors.
