Sharecropping

Economics Glossary – Malone Global University

Definition

Sharecropping is a farming arrangement where a tenant farmer works land owned by someone else and pays rent by giving the landowner a share of the crops produced.

Why It Matters

It shaped agricultural labor systems and often kept tenant farmers in long-term debt and poverty due to unequal bargaining power and credit dependence.

Example

A farmer gives one-third of the harvest to the landowner as payment for using the land.
