Short Selling

Economics Glossary – Malone Global University

Definition

Short selling is an investing strategy where an investor borrows an asset (often a stock) and sells it, hoping to buy it back later at a lower price to return it and profit from the price decline.

Why It Matters

It can improve price discovery and market efficiency, but it involves potentially unlimited losses if prices rise.

Example

A trader shorts a stock at $50 and buys it back at $35, earning the difference (minus fees).
