Simple Interest

Economics Glossary – Malone Global University

Definition

Simple interest is interest calculated only on the original principal amount, not on previously earned interest.

Why It Matters

It is easier to compute than compound interest and is common in some loans and short-term borrowing.

Example

At 5% simple interest on $1,000 for 3 years, interest is $1,000 × 0.05 × 3 = $150.
