Substitute

Economics Glossary – Malone Global University

Definition

A substitute is a good or service that can be used in place of another because it satisfies a similar need, so consumers may switch between them when relative prices change.

Why It Matters

Substitutes affect demand and pricing power: when close substitutes exist, consumers are more price-sensitive.

Example

Tea is a substitute for coffee for many consumers.
