Step 1: Gather Ingredients

Typical ingredients: milk, cream, sugar, eggs or egg yolks, cornstarch or flour, vanilla, butter, and optional flavorings (chocolate, fruit puree, liqueur).

Step 2: Choose Custard Type

Step 3: Cooking Technique

Heat milk or cream with sugar. Temper eggs by gradually adding hot liquid to eggs while whisking. Return mixture to heat and cook until thickened. Remove from heat and add butter or flavorings.

Step 4: Strain & Cool

Strain custard to remove lumps. Cover with plastic wrap touching the surface to prevent a skin. Cool to desired temperature for use in recipes.

Step 5: Use or Store
