Ingredients
- 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F / 43°C)
- 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 1 tsp sugar
- 3 ½ cups bread flour
- 2 tsp salt
- 1 tbsp olive oil (optional for brushing)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let sit 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- Add bread flour and salt. Mix until a soft, sticky dough forms.
- Knead for 8-10 minutes on a floured surface or with a stand mixer until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise 1-2 hours until doubled.
- Punch down dough, shape into 2 long loaves, and place on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Score tops with a sharp knife and brush lightly with olive oil if desired.
- Let loaves rise another 30-40 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden and crisp.
- Cool on a wire rack before slicing.
Tips for Success
- Use bread flour for better gluten development and structure.
- Ensure water is warm, not hot, to activate yeast without killing it.
- Scoring the loaves allows proper expansion and crust formation.
- Optional olive oil brushing enhances crust flavor and sheen.
