- 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 2 tbsp honey or sugar
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter or olive oil, softened
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 cup all-purpose flour (plus extra for kneading)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and honey. Let sit 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- Add softened butter and salt. Gradually mix in whole wheat flour and all-purpose flour until a soft dough forms.
- Knead on a lightly floured surface 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise 1 hour until doubled in size.
- Punch down dough, shape into a loaf, and place in a greased 9x5-inch loaf pan.
- Cover and let rise 30-40 minutes until doubled.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake 30-35 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
- Cool 10 minutes in pan, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
Tips for Success
- Use warm water to properly activate yeast without killing it.
- Knead well for strong gluten and a soft, airy loaf.
- Optional: Brush with melted butter or honey after baking for a soft crust and extra flavor.
- For lighter texture, replace ½ cup whole wheat flour with all-purpose flour.
