Foolproof White Bread
Soft, fluffy, golden-brown classic bread anyone can make at home.
Ingredients
- 1 cup warm water (110°F / 43°C)
- 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 2 tbsp granulated sugar
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
- 1 tsp salt
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Stir and let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- Add softened butter and salt. Gradually mix in flour, one cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough, shape into a loaf, and place into a greased 9x5-inch loaf pan.
- Cover and let rise again for 30-40 minutes until doubled.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
- Remove from oven and cool in pan for 10 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
Tips for Success
- Use warm water, not hot, to activate the yeast without killing it.
- Knead thoroughly to develop gluten for a soft, airy texture.
- Allow the dough to rise fully for light and fluffy bread.
- Optional: Brush the top with melted butter after baking for a soft crust.
