Semicolons and Colons
Semicolons and colons are punctuation marks that help clarify relationships between clauses or items in a list. Correct usage improves readability and precision in writing.
Semicolons (;)
A semicolon connects closely related independent clauses or separates items in a complex list.
- Use a semicolon between independent clauses not joined by a conjunction: I went to the store; it was closed.
- Use a semicolon to separate items in a list when items already contain commas: We visited Paris, France; Rome, Italy; and Berlin, Germany.
Colons (:)
A colon introduces lists, explanations, quotations, or emphasizes information.
- Introduce a list: Bring the following items: a pen, a notebook, and a ruler.
- Introduce an explanation or elaboration: He had only one hobby: collecting stamps.
- Introduce a quotation: She said: "I will be there soon."
- Emphasize a word or phrase: Remember this: practice makes perfect.
Rules / Guidelines
- Do not use a semicolon before a conjunction (use a comma instead).
- Do not capitalize the first word after a colon unless it is a proper noun or starts a complete sentence (style dependent).
- Colons should follow an independent clause.
Examples
Semicolons: I have a meeting tomorrow; I cannot attend the party.
