Lesson 60: Scientific Notation
Scientific notation is a way to express very large or very small numbers in the form: a × 10^n, where 1 ≤ a < 10 and n is an integer.
Examples
Example 1 (Large Number): 450,000 = 4.5 × 10^5
Example 2 (Small Number): 0.00032 = 3.2 × 10^(−4)
Example 3 (Multiplication): (2 × 10^3) × (3 × 10^4) = 6 × 10^7
Example 4 (Division): (6 × 10^5) ÷ (2 × 10^2) = 3 × 10^3
Practice Problems
- Write 12,000,000 in scientific notation.
- Write 0.00047 in scientific notation.
- Multiply: (5 × 10^4) × (2 × 10^3)
- Divide: (9 × 10^6) ÷ (3 × 10^2)
- Add: (3 × 10^3) + (2 × 10^3) (write answer in scientific notation)
