Code Compliance

Real Estate Investing Glossary – Malone Global University

Definition

Code compliance means a property meets the requirements of applicable building, housing, fire, health, and (where relevant) zoning codes. In practice, it also includes having the right permits, passing required inspections, and correcting identified violations.

Why It Matters

Code compliance is an operations and underwriting issue. Violations can create safety risk, trigger fines, cause forced repairs, delay leasing or renovations, and—at the extreme—restrict occupancy. Compliance also supports resident outcomes and reduces exposure tied to habitability and claims.
