Real Estate Owned (REO)

Real Estate Investing Glossary – Malone Global University

Definition

Real Estate Owned (REO) refers to property that has become bank-owned after a foreclosure process. Typically, the property did not sell at the foreclosure auction, so ownership reverted to the lender. The lender then markets the property for sale to recover losses.

How a Property Becomes REO

Why REO Matters to Investors

REO inventory can create acquisition opportunities, but it also comes with operational and legal considerations. Lenders typically want to liquidate REO efficiently, which can produce attractive pricing in some market conditions.
