Definition

A Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) is a corporation that owns, operates, or finances income-producing real estate and elects special tax status under U.S. law.

In exchange for meeting regulatory requirements, a REIT generally does not pay corporate income tax, provided it distributes at least 90% of taxable income to shareholders as dividends.
