The Trojan War (Iliad)

The epic struggle between Greeks and Trojans, immortalized in Homer’s Iliad, focuses on the final year of the war and the wrath of Achilles.

1. Background of the War

The Trojan War began when Paris, prince of Troy, abducted Helen, wife of Menelaus of Sparta. Agamemnon, king of Mycenae and Menelaus’ brother, gathered the Greek kings in a massive expedition to recover her, laying siege to Troy for ten years.

2. Focus of the Iliad

Rather than narrating the entire war, the Iliad centers on a brief period: the quarrel between Agamemnon and Achilles in the tenth year. Achilles withdraws from battle in anger, bringing near disaster to the Greeks.

3. Major Themes and Events

  • The Wrath of Achilles: Achilles’ pride and rage drive the narrative and symbolize human emotion in the face of fate.
  • The Death of Patroclus: Achilles’ closest companion falls in battle, spurring Achilles’ return to the fight.
  • The Death of Hector: Troy’s champion is slain by Achilles, marking the turning point of the war.
  • Divine Intervention: The gods — Zeus, Hera, Athena, Apollo, and others — take sides, constantly shifting the battle’s outcome.

4. Symbolic Meaning

  • The Iliad highlights the tragic cost of war: glory is fleeting, but suffering is enduring.
  • Achilles embodies the dual nature of the hero — unmatched in battle, yet vulnerable to grief and rage.
  • The war shows the interplay of fate, divine will, and human choice.
