DJ Screw, born Robert Earl Davis Jr. in Smithville, Texas, was a pioneering DJ and producer from Houston who created the chopped and screwed style of hip-hop. Emerging in the late 1980s and early 1990s, he became a central figure in shaping the sound of Houston’s underground rap scene. His technique involved slowing down tracks and applying cuts, scratches, and repeats to create a heavy, atmospheric sound.
Through his legendary mixtapes known as “Screw Tapes,” DJ Screw built a massive underground following across Houston and beyond. These tapes featured slowed-down versions of popular rap songs along with freestyles from local artists, helping launch the careers of many members of the Screwed Up Click. His home studio became a cultural hub for Southern hip-hop creativity.
