Kool DJ Herc, born Clive Campbell on April 16, 1955, in Kingston, Jamaica, is widely recognized as one of the founding figures of hip-hop culture. After immigrating to the Bronx, New York, with his family during his youth, Herc brought elements of Jamaican sound system culture into New York's emerging party scene. His innovative approach to DJing helped create the musical foundation upon which hip-hop was built.
During the early 1970s, the Bronx faced economic decline, rising crime, and shrinking public services. Young people often created their own forms of entertainment through neighborhood parties and community gatherings. Herc became one of the most popular DJs in this environment, attracting large crowds with powerful sound systems and a unique ability to keep dancers engaged.
His most influential contribution was the development of the breakbeat technique. By using two copies of the same record, Herc extended the instrumental "breaks" that dancers enjoyed most.
