Overview
Brian Rooney was killed in Queens on October 10, 1985 after his parole-enforcement actions helped return Lorenzo “Fat Cat” Nichols to custody. Multiple federal and state court opinions identify Nichols as the source of the retaliatory order.
Retaliation Motive
Rooney supervised Nichols on parole. Following Nichols’s arrest for new criminal activity, Rooney charged Nichols with violating parole. Court records describe Nichols’s organization responding by arranging an attack on Rooney.
Execution of the Attack
The record is unusually important because judicial accounts conflict. The Second Circuit’s 1994 Lucas decision states that Randolph Lucas fired the fatal shots after senior Nichols associates instructed him and his brother to attack Rooney. Bellamy-related decisions recount state evidence that instead placed Howard Mason and Chris Williams at the shooting.
