Background
George Ford was a retailer in Frank Lucas’s heroin organization. After a federal narcotics indictment, Ford agreed to cooperate against Lucas.
Killing
On July 24, 1974, Ford was shot and killed near his candy store. The New York Supreme Court later stated that Ford’s death caused the government’s then-pending narcotics case against Lucas to collapse.
Later Homicide Case
Years later, investigators reopened the case. A subsequent indictment alleged that Martin Trowery shot Ford at Lucas’s behest. People v. Lucas is a pretrial immunity ruling and does not itself establish the final guilt of Lucas or Trowery; the encyclopedia therefore presents the murder-for-hire theory as a prosecution allegation unless a final judgment is separately documented.
Network Effect
The Ford killing became a key turning point: Morris and Sims continued cooperating, Lucas later cooperated against Atkinson and Jackson, and those former suppliers in turn supplied information that helped revive the Ford investigation.
