John Porter Interview
A 1998 federal opinion describes Assistant District Attorney Dan Rather and investigator John Capers seeking information from John Porter about the Preacher Crew in 1996. Capers had previously dealt with Porter’s family while investigating the murder of Porter’s nephew, identified in the opinion as “Darnell Porter.”
Heatley Arrest
Another 1998 federal opinion describes members of the FBI–NYPD Joint Organized Crime Task Force arresting Heatley in August 1996 in the Bronx. The subsequent federal case incorporated numerous murders and racketeering acts accumulated through the investigation.
Methodological Importance
This investigation illustrates how a crime-volume entry can connect older unsolved or partially solved events to later racketeering prosecutions. It also shows why a later federal filing may contain attribution that was unavailable to journalists at the time an event originally occurred.
