Overview
The Chambers Brothers Organization was an extensive crack-cocaine distribution network in Detroit organized and directed by brothers Billy Joe and Larry Chambers. Federal court records place the conspiracy from approximately 1983 through February 1988.
Structure
The Sixth Circuit described a widespread and carefully structured enterprise generating sales of as much as $200,000 per day. The organization operated from multiple Detroit locations and maintained an enforcement arm known as the “wrecking crew.” Eric “Fats” Wilkins served as principal lieutenant, supervising crack-house operations and handling enforcement and logistics.
Rise after YBI
The University of Michigan’s Detroit history project situates the Chambers organization within a market opening created by the weakening of Young Boys Incorporated. This is a succession in local market opportunity, not proof of formal organizational continuity.
Federal Prosecution
A major federal prosecution in 1988 led to convictions of senior leaders and organization members. Appellate litigation subsequently addressed the conspiracy, continuing-criminal-enterprise, firearm, and sentencing issues arising from the case.
