Overview
Demetrius Flenory and his brother Terry Flenory founded the organization that became known as the Black Mafia Family (BMF). Federal records describe an enterprise that grew from Detroit and eventually extended through major markets including Atlanta and Los Angeles.
Expansion
DEA historical records state that the brothers began dealing while still young and expanded their organization during the 1990s into a multistate cocaine enterprise. Federal court records describe the Flenory organization as the foundation from which BMF grew into a national distribution conspiracy.
Federal Prosecution
Flenory pleaded guilty in 2007 to operating a continuing criminal enterprise and conspiring to launder money. The Sixth Circuit later described him as a leader of a vast multistate drug-trafficking operation and noted his 30-year federal sentence.
Cultural Visibility
BMF later acquired exceptional cultural visibility through hip-hop, entertainment branding, documentaries, and dramatizations. Those cultural narratives should remain analytically separate from the court record establishing the trafficking and money-laundering enterprise.
Evidence Status
A. Founder/leadership role, multistate scope, guilty plea, and sentence are supported by DEA and federal appellate records.
