Identity
Federal docket records identify John Porter with the aliases “Apple” and “Aps.” A 2024 federal order describes Porter as a founding member of the “Preacher Crew” or “Family,” the organization run by Clarence “Preacher” Heatley.
Preacher Crew Role
Federal records describe Porter as participating in violent and narcotics-related conduct associated with the crew. In 1999 he pleaded guilty to federal offenses including conspiracy to commit murder in aid of racketeering, a threat of violence in aid of racketeering, and firearms offenses. He received an aggregate federal sentence of forty years.
Porter Family Connection
A 1998 federal opinion states that investigator John Capers had previously dealt with John Porter and his family while investigating the murder of Porter’s nephew, rendered in that opinion as “Darnell Porter.” In the context of the known 1989–1990 Porter case, this is the official-record basis for treating John Porter as the victim’s uncle.
Kidnapping Attribution
Later documentaries, street histories, and secondary accounts frequently allege that “Johnny Apple” Porter helped arrange or facilitate the kidnapping of his nephew Donnell. The federal death-penalty notice directly alleges Clarence Heatley’s participation in the kidnapping, torture, and murder, but the currently identified public court records do not provide an equally explicit finding that John Porter arranged the kidnapping. That distinction should remain visible in the encyclopedia.
