Overview
Richard “Richie” Roberts was an assistant prosecutor in Essex County who became closely associated with the investigation and prosecution of Frank Lucas’s New Jersey narcotics activity.
Role in the Network
Later accounts identify Roberts as a major figure in the Special Narcotics Task Force investigation that culminated in the 1975 Teaneck raid and related prosecutions. The 2007 film American Gangster substantially dramatized his role; the Russell Crowe character was not a literal documentary reconstruction of every investigator involved.
