Overview
William “Donnell” Porter was abducted in Harlem on December 5, 1989 while walking to school. The kidnappers sought ransom from his family because his older brother Richard “Rich” Porter was reputed to have substantial proceeds from drug trafficking.
Kidnapping
Contemporary reporting described a $500,000 ransom demand and reported that part of William’s finger was sent to the family as pressure to pay. Rich Porter was killed while William was still missing.
Discovery of Body
William’s body was found in the Bronx on January 28, 1990. The event is documented separately so that William is treated as a victim in his own right rather than merely as an element of his brother’s biography.
Preacher Crew Attribution
The United States’ 1997 death-penalty notice against Clarence “Preacher” Heatley alleged that Heatley participated in Donnell’s kidnapping, torture, and murder. A separate federal opinion identifies John “Apple” Porter, a founding Preacher Crew member, as the uncle of a murdered nephew rendered “Darnell Porter.” Later accounts allege a more direct role for Apple in arranging the kidnapping, but that allegation should remain separately attributed unless a controlling record is located.
Historical Significance
The case demonstrates how kidnapping, extortion, drug-market wealth, family vulnerability, and homicide could intersect. It is also a useful test case for the encyclopedia’s evidence standard because contemporary reporting, later federal attribution, and street-history narratives do not all supply the same level of detail.
