Kuzushi 崩し

Off-balancing, structural disruption, and creation of controlled vulnerability

Definition

Kuzushi refers to the act of breaking or disrupting an opponent’s balance and structural integrity. It is the process of creating instability that makes effective resistance or counteraction difficult or impossible.

Concept

Kuzushi is not only physical imbalance but also structural and timing disruption. It occurs when alignment, center, or timing is compromised, creating a window where control can be established with minimal resistance.

Application Across Arts

In aikido, Kuzushi is created through redirection and off-line movement before technique execution. In judo, it is the essential prerequisite for throws. In karate, it appears as structural disruption through strikes, angles, and timing. Across all systems, Kuzushi is the point where control becomes possible.

Common Misunderstanding

Kuzushi is often treated as only physical pulling or pushing. In reality, it is the disruption of balance through structure, timing, and positioning. Without proper Kuzushi, techniques require excessive force and become inefficient or fail entirely.
