Ma-ai 間合い

Distance, engagement range, and spatial relationship in combat

Definition

Ma-ai refers to the spatial relationship between two practitioners, including physical distance, timing potential, and the range in which actions become effective or unsafe. It is not only “distance,” but the structure of engagement itself.

Concept

Ma-ai defines when an action becomes possible. Every technique exists inside a specific Ma-ai. If the distance is wrong, technique fails before execution begins. If the distance is correct, technique becomes efficient even under resistance.

Application Across Arts

In striking arts, Ma-ai governs kicking and punching range. In grappling arts, it defines entry into clinch or throw distance. In weapons systems, it determines blade or staff engagement zones. Across all systems, Ma-ai is the foundation of safe and effective interaction.

Common Misunderstanding

Treating Ma-ai as fixed distance is incorrect. It is dynamic and changes continuously based on movement, intent, and timing. Misreading Ma-ai leads to failed entries, ineffective attacks, and loss of structural control.
