Country Overview

Bulgaria is a parliamentary republic in southeastern Europe on the Balkan Peninsula, with a coastline on the Black Sea. The contemporary Bulgarian state emerged through autonomy following the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878 and declared full independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1908. It is a European Union and NATO member, and it adopted the euro on 1 January 2026. [6]

Historical context: The First Bulgarian Empire emerged in 681 and became a major medieval Balkan power. Later Ottoman rule lasted several centuries; the 1878 liberation settlement produced an autonomous principality, followed by unification in 1885 and formal independence in 1908. Bulgaria was a communist people’s republic from 1946 to 1990 and adopted its democratic post-communist constitution in 1991. [6]

Methodology: Population is the World Bank 2025 country series; GDP and GDP per capita are in current U.S. dollars and real GDP growth is a volume change, not an exchange-rate change. Land area excludes inland waters under the FAO definition, whereas the country-specific total area can be a distinct national or regional surface measure. Export tables are illustrative merchandise categories, not services data or a harmonized ranking. Religious figures identify their census or survey reference year and denominator.
