Country Overview
Denmark is a Nordic parliamentary constitutional monarchy in Northern Europe. Denmark proper consists of the Jutland peninsula and numerous islands, while the Kingdom of Denmark also comprises the self-governing Faroe Islands and Greenland. The country is a founding member of NATO, joined the European Communities in 1973, and retains the Danish krone through an opt-out from adopting the euro. The area, population and World Bank indicators below refer to Denmark proper unless expressly noted. [6]

- Kingdom of Denmark (Kongeriget Danmark); Denmark (Danmark)

- Copenhagen (København)
- UN M49 classification
- Europe / Northern Europe [3]

- 5 June 1849: first democratic constitutional framework replaced absolute monarchy
- Current constitutional framework
- Constitution of 5 June 1953, providing the basis of the modern parliamentary monarchy
- Constitution Day
- 5 June (Grundlovsdag); widely treated as a national commemoration, although Denmark has no separately designated official national day
- Territorial distinction
- Kingdom includes Denmark proper, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands; the two North Atlantic territories exercise extensive self-government

- DK (alpha-2), DNK (alpha-3), 208 (numeric)
- Country-code top-level domain

Historical context: Danish kingship developed during the Viking Age and medieval period. Denmark entered a long union with Norway and other Nordic territories, while the constitutional transition of 1849 ended absolutist monarchy. The modern constitutional order dates to 1953. Greenland and the Faroe Islands are part of the kingdom with distinct constitutional and administrative arrangements; Greenland and the Faroes are outside the EU. [9]
Geography and Population
- Total geographical area, Denmark proper
- 42,925 km² (Eurostat geographic reference, 2026; excludes Greenland and the Faroe Islands) [6]
- Land area, Denmark proper
- 40,000 km² (World Bank/FAO 2024 land-only series)
- Population, Denmark proper
- 6,009,169 (World Bank, 2025)
- Annual population growth
- 0.5% (2025, World Bank) [1]
- Geographic setting
- Jutland borders Germany; Zealand, Funen and other islands occupy the Danish straits between the North and Baltic seas
- Autonomous territories
- Greenland and the Faroe Islands are self-governing parts of the wider kingdom but are excluded from the headline Denmark-proper area and population figures
- Physical geography
- Low relief, agricultural plains, sandy coasts, islands, fjords and shallow marine passages
- Major urban centers
- Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense, Aalborg, and Esbjerg
Data interpretation: A distinction is essential: Denmark proper covers the mainland-and-island European country, whereas the Kingdom of Denmark also encompasses Greenland and the Faroe Islands. World Bank and Eurostat Denmark summary figures should not be read as the entire kingdom’s landmass or population. [1]
Economy and International Trade
- Economic profile
- High-income Nordic economy centered on life sciences, industrial manufacturing, maritime shipping, renewable energy, agrifood and business services
- Nominal GDP
- Approximately US$462.53 billion (2025, current prices; World Bank) [1]

- Real GDP growth
- 2.9% (2025, World Bank) [1]

- Important goods export markets
- United States, Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands and United Kingdom feature prominently in recent trade reporting; product-specific rankings can differ
- Industry strengths
- Pharmaceuticals and biotech, food processing, machinery, wind-energy systems, chemicals, shipping and logistics
- Services distinction
- International shipping and other services contribute strongly to the economy but are not included in the merchandise-export table
Principal Merchandise Export Categories (2025)

GDP is not wages: Nominal GDP is aggregate economic output; GDP per capita divides that output by population. Neither measure represents average or median personal earnings. [1]
People and Society

- Danish (in Denmark proper); Faroese and Greenlandic have distinct legal and official roles in the self-governing territories
- Other languages
- German minority language in southern Jutland; English is widely used; immigrant and heritage languages are also spoken
- Established church
- Evangelical Lutheran Church of Denmark (Folkekirken), historically the state-supported national church
- Church membership, third quarter 2026
- 4,210,480 registered members of the national church (Statistics Denmark; administrative membership, not a survey of belief or attendance)
- Religious communities
- Besides Lutheran Christianity, other Christian traditions, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism and nonreligious populations are present
- Demographic context
- Highly urbanized population, universal public welfare services, and Nordic cultural institutions
Demographic interpretation: Administrative Folkekirken membership represents registered members among Denmark residents, not all faith or non-faith identifications. Religion in Greenland and the Faroe Islands should not be inferred from Denmark-proper figures. [8]

Methodology: Population is the World Bank 2025 country series; GDP and GDP per capita are in current U.S. dollars and real GDP growth is a volume change, not an exchange-rate change. Land area excludes inland waters under the FAO definition, whereas the country-specific total area can be a distinct national or regional surface measure. Export tables are illustrative merchandise categories, not services data or a harmonized ranking. Religious figures identify their census or survey reference year and denominator.
