Country Overview
Germany, officially the Federal Republic of Germany, is a federal parliamentary republic in Central Europe. The present Federal Republic was established in western Germany in 1949 and extended to the eastern German states upon reunification on 3 October 1990; unification was not the foundation of an unrelated state. Germany is the European Union’s largest economy, a founding participant in European integration, and a member of the euro area and NATO. [6]

Historical context: German-speaking principalities and cities formed part of the Holy Roman Empire for centuries. A German nation-state emerged in 1871; the Weimar Republic followed World War I, and Nazi dictatorship led to World War II and genocide. Allied occupation after 1945 was followed by separate West and East German states in 1949. Germany reunited peacefully on 3 October 1990 under the existing Federal Republic and its Basic Law. [8]

Methodology: Population is the World Bank 2025 country series; GDP and GDP per capita are in current U.S. dollars and real GDP growth is a volume change, not an exchange-rate change. Land area excludes inland waters under the FAO definition, whereas the country-specific total area can be a distinct national or regional surface measure. Export tables are illustrative merchandise categories, not services data or a harmonized ranking. Religious figures identify their census or survey reference year and denominator.
