Country Overview

Greece, officially the Hellenic Republic, is a parliamentary republic in southeastern Europe at the southern end of the Balkan Peninsula. Its mainland, Aegean and Ionian islands connect the Mediterranean, Balkans and Anatolian regions. The modern state emerged from the Greek War of Independence beginning in 1821 and received international recognition in 1830. Its present parliamentary republican order was consolidated following the restoration of democracy in 1974 and the 1975 constitution. [6]

Historical context: Ancient Greek city-states, Hellenistic kingdoms, Byzantine territories and centuries of Ottoman rule form distinct historical periods. The 1821 struggle for independence led to the 1830 recognition of an independent Greek polity and the 1832 monarchy. The modern republic’s present constitutional framework followed the fall of military rule in 1974 and the adoption of the 1975 constitution. Greece joined the European Communities in 1981. [8]

GDP is not wages: Nominal GDP is aggregate economic output; GDP per capita divides that output by population. Neither measure represents average or median personal earnings. [1]

People and Society

Official language
Greek
Other languages and communities
Albanian, Turkish, Romani and many migrant languages are spoken; Muslim minority communities exist in Western Thrace
Religious traditions
Eastern Orthodox Christianity plays a historically prominent role; the Constitution recognizes Eastern Orthodoxy as the prevailing religion while protecting freedom of religious conscience
Other communities
Muslim, Roman Catholic, Protestant, Jewish and other religious communities
Religious statistics caveat
No modern comprehensive religious-affiliation percentages are included: administrative church counts are not equivalent to a population-wide census of belief
Social geography
Mainland urban centers and island communities have distinct patterns of residence, seasonal work, tourism and migration

Demographic interpretation: The status of the “prevailing religion” is a constitutional provision, not proof that a certain percentage of the population currently attends church or identifies as Orthodox. [9]

Methodology: Population is the World Bank 2025 country series; GDP and GDP per capita are in current U.S. dollars and real GDP growth is a volume change, not an exchange-rate change. Land area excludes inland waters under the FAO definition, whereas the country-specific total area can be a distinct national or regional surface measure. Export tables are illustrative merchandise categories, not services data or a harmonized ranking. Religious figures identify their census or survey reference year and denominator.
