Country Overview
Hungary is a landlocked Central European country that the United Nations M49 system classifies within Eastern Europe. Budapest is its political and principal economic center. Medieval Hungarian statehood dates to the kingdom associated with Stephen I, while the modern state emerged from the dissolution of Austria-Hungary in 1918 and underwent major constitutional transitions in 1949, 1989 and 2012. Hungary belongs to the European Union and NATO but retains the forint rather than using the euro. [6]

Historical context: The medieval Kingdom of Hungary grew into a major central European polity, later enduring Ottoman and Habsburg rule. The 1867 Austro-Hungarian Compromise established the Dual Monarchy. The post-1918 state experienced territorial losses, the Second World War, a communist regime after 1949, the 1956 uprising and the 1989 democratic transition. The 2012 Fundamental Law superseded the heavily amended 1949 constitutional text. [9]

- About 60% answered the voluntary religion question. Among respondents, around 46% identified as Roman Catholic, 16% as Reformed/Calvinist, and 27% as having no religion; other traditions were also reported [8]
- Religious census limitation
- Because approximately 40% did not answer, percentages of respondents are not population-wide percentages

Methodology: Population is the World Bank 2025 country series; GDP and GDP per capita are in current U.S. dollars and real GDP growth is a volume change, not an exchange-rate change. Land area excludes inland waters under the FAO definition, whereas the country-specific total area can be a distinct national or regional surface measure. Export tables are illustrative merchandise categories, not services data or a harmonized ranking. Religious figures identify their census or survey reference year and denominator.
