Country Overview

Iceland is an island republic in the North Atlantic at the intersection of tectonic plates, with a volcanic landscape, extensive glaciers, and a population concentrated around Reykjavík. The Alþingi traces its origins to a national assembly founded around 930. The country became a sovereign kingdom in personal union with Denmark in 1918, then an independent republic on 17 June 1944. Iceland is a NATO and European Economic Area member but is not a European Union or euro-area member. [11]

Historical context: Icelandic settlement commenced in the late ninth century, and the Alþingi assembly began around 930. The Icelandic Commonwealth ended with submission to Norwegian royal authority in the thirteenth century; later Danish rule followed. A home-rule process preceded the 1918 sovereignty settlement. In 1944, Iceland established the republic while Denmark was occupied during the Second World War. [11]

Data interpretation: The 2025 World Bank annual population (392,404) is distinct from Statistics Iceland’s 1 January 2026 estimate (394,324). See Statistics Iceland’s dated release for the latter figure. The island’s land area is smaller than its total surface area because inland waters are excluded. [1]

Growing migration and urban concentration in the Reykjavík region; small settlements in coastal and rural areas

Demographic interpretation: No unsupported 2026 religion percentages are given. Registration in a religious or life-stance organization differs from a question about personal belief. [9]

Methodology: Population is the World Bank 2025 country series; GDP and GDP per capita are in current U.S. dollars and real GDP growth is a volume change, not an exchange-rate change. Land area excludes inland waters under the FAO definition, whereas the country-specific total area can be a distinct national or regional surface measure. Export tables are illustrative merchandise categories, not services data or a harmonized ranking. Religious figures identify their census or survey reference year and denominator.
