Historical context: The Italian Peninsula contained ancient city-states, Etruscan and Roman polities, and later diverse medieval kingdoms, communes and republics. The nineteenth-century Risorgimento culminated in the Kingdom of Italy in 1861; Rome was incorporated in 1870. Fascist dictatorship arose in the 1920s, and Italy participated in the Second World War. The 1946 referendum chose a republic, followed by the democratic Constitution of 1948. Italy became a founder of the European Economic Community in 1957–1958. [8]

GDP is not wages: Nominal GDP is aggregate economic output; GDP per capita divides that output by population. Neither measure represents average or median personal earnings. [1]

People and Society

Official national language
Italian; the Republic protects historical linguistic minorities under its Constitution
Protected and regional languages
German and French in relevant autonomous regions; Slovene, Ladin, Sardinian, Friulian and other protected minority languages
Religious traditions
Roman Catholic Christianity has historic cultural prominence; Protestant, Orthodox, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu and nonreligious communities also exist
Religious measurement caution
Italy does not collect a comprehensive religion question in its ordinary population census; no unverified 2025 religious percentages are asserted
Demographic structure
Aging population and low birth rates; immigration and regional differences affect demographic trends
Culture and cities
Long traditions in literature, architecture, music, design and regional culinary heritage

Demographic interpretation: Religious tradition is described qualitatively because nominal Catholic affiliation, church records, and survey belief or attendance are not equivalent census measures. [8]

Methodology: Population is the World Bank 2025 country series; GDP and GDP per capita are in current U.S. dollars and real GDP growth is a volume change, not an exchange-rate change. Land area excludes inland waters under the FAO definition, whereas the country-specific total area can be a distinct national or regional surface measure. Export tables are illustrative merchandise categories, not services data or a harmonized ranking. Religious figures identify their census or survey reference year and denominator.
