Country Overview

Moldova is a landlocked Eastern European republic between Romania and Ukraine. Its modern state emerged from the dissolution of the Soviet Union and declared independence on 27 August 1991. The Republic of Moldova claims the territory east of the Dniester that is controlled by the unrecognized Transnistrian administration; statistical coverage and effective political control must be distinguished. Chișinău is the capital. [7]

Historical context: The territory of the Republic of Moldova has medieval Moldavian, Ottoman, Russian imperial, Romanian and Soviet histories. The Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic emerged in 1940 under Soviet authority. Following a declaration of sovereignty in 1990, Moldova declared independence on 27 August 1991. The 1992 Transnistria conflict left the government without effective control over most territory east of the Dniester. A 1994 constitution governs the contemporary republic. Moldova became an EU candidate in 2022 and formal accession negotiations began in 2024. [11]

Data interpretation: The 2024 Moldovan census estimated 2,409,207 usually resident persons within the government-controlled census scope. It excluded most of the Transnistrian region and Bender, so its coverage does not represent a territory-wide count. Methodology: Population is the World Bank 2025 country series; GDP and GDP per capita are in current U.S. dollars and real GDP growth is a volume change, not an exchange-rate change. Land area excludes inland waters under the FAO definition, whereas the country-specific total area can be a distinct national or regional surface measure. Export tables are illustrative merchandise categories, not services data or a harmonized ranking. Religious figures identify their census or survey reference year and denominator.
