Country Overview

Monaco is a sovereign microstate on the Mediterranean coast of Western Europe, surrounded on land by France and adjoining the Ligurian Sea. The House of Grimaldi has ruled for centuries, and the contemporary principality is a hereditary constitutional monarchy headed by Prince Albert II. Extensive cross-border commuting, luxury tourism, financial and professional services, and land reclamation shape its economy. [6]

Historical context: The Grimaldi family established a durable dynastic presence in Monaco beginning in the late thirteenth century. Monaco entered French protection in the seventeenth century and formalized its modern territorial sovereignty by a treaty with France in 1861. A constitution was first granted in 1911, followed by the 1962 Constitution. Prince Albert II succeeded Prince Rainier III in 2005. The sovereign state is closely integrated economically with France but is not a member of the European Union. [6]

Foreign-trade observatory reports exports excluding France rose 7.3% during 2024; 2024 reference used for merchandise categories
Important external markets
Italy, Germany, Switzerland and other overseas partners, based on 2024 foreign-trade observatory
Statistical caution
2024 GDP per capita uses the World Bank’s 2024 population denominator, not the separately published 2025 official resident count

Principal Merchandise Export Categories (2024 official foreign-trade observatory)

Representative merchandise export sectors; not a tariff-line ranking.
CategoryIllustrative exported products

Cosmetics and chemical goodsPerfumes, cosmetics and specialist chemical products
Transport-related manufacturesVehicle parts, equipment and related goods
Other manufactured and traded goodsIndustrial components, consumer goods and miscellaneous products

IMSEE 2024 Foreign Trade Observatory covers Monaco trade with countries OTHER THAN France; it is not a comprehensive global total including France. The table contains illustrative sectors and not a complete current export-value ranking. [8]

GDP is not wages: Nominal GDP is aggregate economic output; GDP per capita divides that output by population. Neither measure represents average or median personal earnings. [1]

People and Society

Official language
French
Other languages in everyday use
Italian, English and Monégasque; Monégasque has strong cultural standing
Religious framework
Roman Catholicism is the state religion under Article 9 of the constitution; freedom of worship is protected
Other religious affiliations
Protestant, Jewish, Muslim and other religious and nonreligious communities; no verified contemporary census shares asserted
Citizenship and residence
The population includes many non-Monégasque citizens; citizenship and residency are different measures
Demographic context
A high proportion of workers commute from France and Italy, so resident population does not equal the number of people working in Monaco

Demographic interpretation: Monaco does not publish a universally comparable recent full-population religion distribution. The constitutional status of Catholicism should not be converted into a claimed percentage of residents. [6]

Methodology: Monaco headline population is 38,857 from the official 2025 government release. The World Bank publishes 38,341 for 2025; GDP and GDP per capita are in the World Bank 2024 series; GDP and GDP per capita are in current U.S. dollars and real GDP growth is a volume change, not an exchange-rate change. Land area excludes inland waters under the FAO definition, whereas the country-specific total area can be a distinct national or regional surface measure. Export tables are illustrative merchandise categories, not services data or a harmonized ranking. Religious figures identify their census or survey reference year and denominator.
