Historical context: Medieval principalities in the region were followed by centuries of Ottoman-Venetian borderland politics and the rise of an independent Montenegrin principality. The Congress of Berlin recognized its independence in 1878, and it became a kingdom in 1910. Following the First World War it joined the Yugoslav state; during the late twentieth century it was part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and later the union with Serbia. A 2006 referendum led to the present independent republic. Montenegro joined NATO in 2017 and has been negotiating EU accession since 2012. [10]

Methodology: Population is the World Bank 2025 country series; GDP and GDP per capita are in current U.S. dollars and real GDP growth is a volume change, not an exchange-rate change. Land area excludes inland waters under the FAO definition, whereas the country-specific total area can be a distinct national or regional surface measure. Export tables are illustrative merchandise categories, not services data or a harmonized ranking. Religious figures identify their census or survey reference year and denominator.
