Country Overview

Norway is a Nordic constitutional monarchy extending along the northern and western part of the Scandinavian Peninsula, with a long Atlantic coastline, deep fjords and Arctic territories. Oslo is its capital. The country’s modern independence from Sweden dates to 1905; its economy combines hydrocarbon exports and maritime industries with hydropower and an extensive welfare state. Norway is a NATO member but not an EU member; it participates in the European Economic Area. [7]

Historical context: Norway’s early medieval polities were consolidated during the Viking and post-Viking periods. The country joined dynastic unions with Denmark and later Sweden. The constitution drafted at Eidsvoll in May 1814 became the foundational constitutional text; the union with Sweden ended peacefully in 1905. Norway was occupied by Nazi Germany from April 1940 to May 1945. In the postwar era, it established a broad welfare state, joined NATO in 1949 and developed major offshore petroleum industries. Referendums in 1972 and 1994 rejected membership in the European Communities/European Union. [12]

Methodology: Population is the World Bank 2025 country series; GDP and GDP per capita are in current U.S. dollars and real GDP growth is a volume change, not an exchange-rate change. Land area excludes inland waters under the FAO definition, whereas the country-specific total area can be a distinct national or regional surface measure. Export tables are illustrative merchandise categories, not services data or a harmonized ranking. Religious figures identify their census or survey reference year and denominator.
