Country Overview

Slovenia is a small Central European and northern Adriatic parliamentary republic linking Alpine, Pannonian, Dinaric and Mediterranean landscapes. Ljubljana is its capital. After centuries within Habsburg realms and later Yugoslav states, Slovenia declared independence in June 1991 and defended it in a brief conflict. It joined NATO and the EU in 2004, adopted the euro in 2007, and participates in the Schengen area. [6]

Historical context: In Roman and early medieval eras, the region formed a meeting zone of Mediterranean, Alpine and Pannonian cultures. Most Slovene-speaking lands were governed by the Habsburgs for centuries. The area entered the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in 1918, later Yugoslavia; World War II brought Axis occupation, resistance and repression. Slovenia became a republic within socialist Yugoslavia. Democratic change at the end of the 1980s led to the declaration of independence on 25 June 1991 and the brief Ten-Day War. The new state developed democratic institutions, acceded to the European Union and NATO in 2004, and joined the euro area and Schengen in 2007. [6]

SURS February 2026 provisional release reported 2025 goods exports of €72.054 billion and imports of €70.566 billion. A June 2026 release announced revised final tables; this profile explicitly identifies its quoted total as the February provisional value rather than claiming it is the final revision. GDP is not wages: Nominal GDP is aggregate economic output; GDP per capita divides that output by population. Neither measure represents average or median personal earnings. [1]

Methodology: Population is the World Bank 2025 country series; GDP and GDP per capita are in current U.S. dollars and real GDP growth is a volume change, not an exchange-rate change. Land area excludes inland waters under the FAO definition, whereas the country-specific total area can be a distinct national or regional surface measure. Export tables are illustrative merchandise categories, not services data or a harmonized ranking. Religious figures identify their census or survey reference year and denominator.
