Overview
Frequency, period, and wavelength are core wave quantities. They describe repetition in time and space. Frequency tells how many cycles occur per second. Period tells how long one cycle takes. Wavelength tells the distance between repeated points in the wave pattern.
Frequency
Frequency is the number of wave cycles that pass a point per second. It is measured in hertz, where one hertz equals one cycle per second. Higher frequency means more cycles occur in the same amount of time.
Period
Period is the time required for one complete cycle. If a wave has a short period, it repeats quickly. If it has a long period, it repeats slowly.
Frequency and Period Relationship
Frequency and period are inversely related. When frequency increases, period decreases. When period increases, frequency decreases.
Wavelength
Wavelength is the spatial length of one wave cycle. It can be measured from crest to crest, trough to trough, compression to compression, or between any two matching points in the pattern.
Connection to Wave Speed
Wave speed connects frequency and wavelength. For a given wave speed, higher frequency means shorter wavelength, while lower frequency means longer wavelength.
Sound Example
In sound, frequency is connected to pitch. Higher-frequency sound is heard as higher pitch, while lower-frequency sound is heard as lower pitch.
Light Example
In light, frequency and wavelength are connected to color and electromagnetic energy. Visible colors correspond to different frequency and wavelength ranges.
Measurement
Frequency can be measured by counting cycles per second. Period can be measured by timing one cycle. Wavelength can be measured as a distance between repeated spatial features.
Common Mistakes
A common mistake is confusing period with frequency. Period is time per cycle, while frequency is cycles per time.
Why This Matters in Physics
Frequency, period, and wavelength are required for understanding sound, light, radio, vibration, resonance, standing waves, and many communication technologies.
