مُرَاجَعَة ٣: فِي المُجْتَمَعUnit III Assessment
Chapter Objectives
This chapter introduces no new grammar system. By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Give and follow directions using imperatives and movement vocabulary from Chapter 11.
- Talk about weather, leisure activities, and future plans using future markers and ability verbs from Chapter 12.
- Express need, obligation, and advice, including subjunctive frames, from Chapter 13.
- Narrate completed actions using the singular perfect tense from Chapter 14.
- Describe a place, person, or experience using a relative clause with الَّذِي or الَّتِي, including the resumptive pronoun where required.
- Combine these four systems inside a single connected community-interaction exchange.
- Read a short multi-part community text that integrates directions, plans, health, and completed actions.
- Write a connected paragraph of six to eight sentences that narrates a community experience and recycles at least three systems from Unit III.
- Complete an integrated speaking, listening, reading, and writing performance task that draws on Chapters 11 through 14 without introducing new material.
Communication Scenario
Tom is now settled into his new job and his Arabic class. This week, Layla invites him to a neighborhood event, and Tom has to ask for directions, talk about his plans for the weekend, mention how he has been feeling, and tell Layla about his new office and the class he finished — all in one connected conversation. This chapter does not add anything new to your Arabic. Instead, it asks you to bring together everything from Unit III — Chapters 11 through 14 — the way you would in a real, unplanned conversation.
- Before you begin, look back briefly at the Grammar Focus sections of Chapters 11 through 14. This chapter assumes you can already use those systems; it does not reteach them from the beginning.
- As you work through this chapter, notice how directions, plans, health language, and narration naturally appear together in a single conversation, rather than staying in separate boxes.
Cumulative Vocabulary Review
The vocabulary below is not new. It is drawn from Chapters 11 through 14 and is recycled here at consolidated (C) or expanded (E) status, matching the Chapter 15 matrix column. No item in this chapter is introduced for the first time.
| Arabic | Meaning | Source Chapter |
|---|---|---|
| يَمِين / يَسَار | right / left | Chapter 11 |
| اِذْهَب / اُدْخُل | go! / enter! (commands) | Chapter 11 |
| طَقْس | weather | Chapter 12 |
| سَأَذْهَب / سَأَسْتَطِيع | I will go / I will be able to | Chapter 12 |
| يَجِب أَنْ | it is necessary that | Chapter 13 |
| نَصِيحَة | advice | Chapter 13 |
| دَرَسَ / عَمِلَ / بَدَأَ / نَجَحَ | studied / worked / started / succeeded | Chapter 14 |
| الَّذِي / الَّتِي | who, that, which (masc./fem.) | Chapter 4, expanded Chapter 14 |
All items above are marked A (assessment) in the Chapter 15 matrix column: they are used for synthesis and evidence in this chapter, not presented as new instruction.
Review — Directions and Imperatives
Before Tom can meet Layla at the event, he needs to ask for and follow directions — the imperative and movement system from Chapter 11.
- اِذْهَب إِلَى اليَمِين، ثُمَّ اُدْخُل المَكْتَبَة.Go to the right, then enter the library.imperative + prepositional phrase, recycled from Ch. 11
- هَل هَذَا الطَّرِيق قَرِيب مِن الجَامِعَة؟Is this road near the university?location question, recycled from Ch. 6/11
The imperative forms and movement vocabulary here are identical to what you learned in Chapter 11. This section exists only to bring the system back into active use before you combine it with newer material.
تَدْرِيب — Practice: Give a short set of directions using at least two imperatives.
- كَيْف أَذْهَب مِن البَيْت إِلَى المَكْتَب؟ (How do I go from the house to the office?)
Review — Future, Ability, and Plans
Layla and Tom also need to talk about their plans for the coming weekend — the future and ability language from Chapter 12.
- سَأَذْهَب إِلَى الحَفْلَة يَوم السَّبْت إِذَا كَانَ الطَّقْس جَمِيلًا.I will go to the party on Saturday if the weather is nice.future marker + weather vocabulary, recycled from Ch. 12
- هَل تَسْتَطِيع أَنْ تَأْتِيَ مَعِي؟Can you come with me?ability verb + subjunctive-marked complement, recycled from Ch. 12
The future marker and ability verb here were introduced in Chapter 12 and are unchanged. Use them exactly as you learned them; this chapter does not expand them to new subjects or new environments.
تَدْرِيب — Practice: Answer using a future-tense sentence.
- مَاذَا سَتَفْعَل فِي نِهَايَة الأُسْبُوع؟ (What will you do this weekend?)
Review — Need and Advice
Layla checks in on Tom's health before the event — recycling the need and advice language from Chapter 13.
- يَجِب أَنْ تَرْتَاح قَبْل الحَفْلَة.You must rest before the party.يجب أن + subjunctive verb, recycled from Ch. 13
- نَصِيحَتِي أَنْ تَشْرَب مَاء كَثِيرًا.My advice is that you drink a lot of water.advice frame, recycled from Ch. 13
The subjunctive frames after يَجِب أَنْ and similar expressions are used here exactly as in Chapter 13. No new particle or clause type is added in this chapter.
تَدْرِيب — Practice: Give one piece of advice using يَجِب أَنْ.
- أَنَا مُتْعَب قَلِيلًا هَذَا الأُسْبُوع. (I am a little tired this week — respond with advice.)
Review — Perfect Tense and Relative Clauses
Finally, Tom tells Layla what he has already done this week and describes his new office and class, using the perfect tense and the relative-clause pattern from Chapter 14.
- نَجَحْتُ فِي الاِمْتِحَان وَبَدَأْتُ العَمَل فِي مَكْتَب جَدِيد.I passed the exam and started work at a new office.two 1st-person perfect verbs, recycled from Ch. 14
- المَكْتَب الَّذِي أَعْمَل فِيهِ قَرِيب مِن الجَامِعَة الَّتِي دَرَسْتُ فِيهَا.The office where I work is near the university where I studied.two relative clauses with resumptive pronouns, recycled from Ch. 14
The perfect-tense subject suffixes and the relative-clause pattern with الَّذِي and الَّتِي are used here exactly as in Chapter 14. Plural and dual perfect forms remain receptive, and full weak-verb conjugation remains outside this chapter's scope, exactly as in Chapter 14.
تَدْرِيب — Practice: Combine the two sentences using a relative clause.
- هَذِهِ هِيَ الحَفْلَة. دُعِيتُ إِلَيْهَا. → ______ (receptive verb دُعِيتُ "I was invited" is glossed for this item only and is not a production target)
Integrated Dialogue
Setting: Layla calls Tom to invite him to a neighborhood event and to catch up on his week. The conversation moves naturally among directions, plans, health, and completed actions.
السِّيَاق: تَتَّصِل لَيْلَى بِتُوم لِتَدْعُوَهُ إِلَى مُنَاسَبَة فِي الحَيّ وَلِتَطْمَئِنَّ عَلَى أَخْبَارِ أُسْبُوعِهِ.
أَسْئِلَة الفَهْم — Comprehension questions:
- Identify one imperative, one future-tense verb, one subjunctive complement, and one perfect-tense verb in the dialogue.
- Find the relative clause in the dialogue and identify the noun it describes.
- لِمَاذَا تُوم مُتْعَب؟ (Why is Tom tired?)
Listening Practice
Ask your instructor, a partner, or a text-to-speech tool to read the following short account aloud twice at a moderate pace. Listen without reading along the first time, then answer the questions below.
Listening task
List every perfect-tense verb and every future-tense verb you hear. Then answer:
- What does the speaker say they must do?
- Where will the party be, and how is it described?
Speaking Practice
تَدْرِيب مُوَجَّه — Controlled practice: Four-system chain
With a partner, take turns building a short account that uses, in order: one imperative or direction, one future-tense plan, one piece of advice with يَجِب أَنْ, and one perfect-tense verb.
مُهِمَّة تَوَاصُل — Communicative task: Planning a community event
With a partner, role-play inviting each other to a neighborhood event. Give directions, discuss the weather and your plans, exchange advice about health or rest, and describe something you finished this week using a relative clause.
لِلْمُتَعَلِّمِينَ المُسْتَقِلِّينَ — Solo alternative
Record yourself narrating a short community scenario that includes directions, a future plan, a piece of advice, and at least two perfect-tense verbs with one relative clause. Listen back and check each system against the review sections above.
Reading Practice
Read the short community bulletin and the personal note below, then answer the questions that follow.
Text 1 — A neighborhood bulletin
Text 2 — A personal note
Comprehension questions:
- According to Text 1, what two directions should you follow to reach the party?
- According to Text 1, by what time should you arrive?
- According to Text 2, what advice did the speaker's friend give, and why?
- According to Text 2, how is the garden described, and how is the school connected to the speaker's own experience?
Writing Workshop
In this chapter's writing task, you will write a connected paragraph about a community event, combining at least three systems from Unit III.
- Choose your event. Decide on a real or imagined neighborhood event, class, or work occasion.
- Give directions. Write one or two sentences using imperatives to explain how to get there.
- State a plan. Write one sentence about your future plans related to the event, optionally mentioning the weather.
- Give or receive advice. Write one sentence using يَجِب أَنْ or a similar advice expression.
- Narrate something completed. Write two sentences using perfect-tense verbs, including at least one relative clause with الَّذِي or الَّتِي.
- Draft the paragraph. Write six to eight connected sentences in total.
- Revise. Check your draft against the editing checklist below.
قَائِمَة المُرَاجَعَة — Editing checklist:
- I used at least one imperative or direction correctly.
- I used at least one future-tense verb correctly.
- I used يَجِب أَنْ or another advice expression with a correct subjunctive-marked verb.
- I used at least two perfect-tense verbs with correct subject suffixes.
- I used at least one relative clause with the resumptive pronoun where required.
- My paragraph is connected, not a list of unrelated sentences.
- I wrote all letters and endings with correct right-to-left joining.
Culture and Communication
Neighborhood gatherings, shared gardens or courtyards, and informal community invitations are common across many Arabic-speaking communities, though the specific customs, timing, and level of formality vary by country, city, and social circle. As in earlier chapters, it is useful to ask directly about local expectations rather than assuming one pattern applies everywhere.
The MSA expressions practiced in this unit are the productive target for this course. In everyday spoken Arabic, learners will often hear different everyday phrasing for invitations, directions, and well-wishing. Treat any such comparison your instructor introduces as receptive and comparative information, not a substitute for the MSA forms practiced here.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Error: Saying *سَذَهَبْتُ, combining the future marker with a perfect-tense form.
Correction: The future marker attaches only to the imperfect: سَأَذْهَب. Keep future and perfect forms separate, as practiced in Chapters 12 and 14.
Error: Saying *الحَدِيقَة الَّتِي سَتَكُون الحَفْلَة when the described noun is a prepositional object inside the clause.
Correction: Keep the resumptive suffix: الحَدِيقَة الَّتِي سَتَكُون الحَفْلَة فِيهَا, exactly as practiced in Chapter 14.
Error: Saying *يَجِب أَنْ أَرْتَاح incorrectly by using an indicative form where the subjunctive-marked verb is required.
Correction: Keep the subjunctive-marked verb after أَنْ, as practiced in Chapter 13: يَجِب أَنْ أَرْتَاح.

Looking Ahead
مَا الَّذِي تَسْتَطِيعُ فِعْلَهُ الآن — What you can do now
You can give and follow directions, discuss plans and the weather, express need and give advice, and narrate completed actions while describing people and places with a relative clause — all within a single connected community interaction. You have shown that you can combine the systems from Chapters 11 through 14 without treating them as separate, disconnected topics.
