Verbal nouns, derived verb forms, purpose clauses, and learning strategies · Speak and Write Arabic: Everyday Independence and Connected Communication

Chapter Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Talk about learning goals, study habits, and skill development in connected MSA.
  2. Recognize and begin producing a small set of high-frequency derived verb forms (Forms II, V, and X) alongside the Form I verbs you already control.
  3. Form and use the verbal noun and active participle of familiar derived verbs to describe learning activities and the people who do them.
  4. Continue using purpose clauses with لِـ, كَي, and حَتَّى, recycled from Chapter 8, to explain why learners study or practice in a particular way.
  5. Read and listen to short texts about study strategies, courses, and skill-building.
  6. Write a short paragraph describing your own approach to learning a skill, using at least one derived verb, one verbal noun, and one purpose clause.

Communication Scenario

Unit III turns from managing daily logistics toward learning, work, and community life. This chapter opens that shift by asking a simple question: how do you learn something new, and how do you talk about it? Arabic verbs are organized into families called "forms," and beyond the basic Form I verbs you already know, a small number of derived forms — especially Forms II, V, and X — carry recurring, learnable meanings such as "to cause," "to do something to or for oneself," and "to seek or request." Learning to recognize these patterns opens up a much larger vocabulary without requiring you to memorize each word as an isolated fact.

  1. You will learn vocabulary for courses, skills, and study strategies.
  2. You will begin recognizing and producing Form II, Form V, and Form X verbs built on familiar roots.
  3. You will learn the verbal noun and active participle of these derived verbs.
  4. You will continue using purpose clauses to explain the reasons behind study choices.

What This Chapter Builds On

Chapter 11 opens Unit III by building on the subjunctive, jussive, and time-clause systems consolidated at the end of Unit II. It introduces two closely related new systems — derived verb forms and their associated verbal nouns and active participles — in the context of learning strategies and skill development, while recycling purpose clauses from Chapter 8.

Recycled
Purpose clauses with لِـ / كَي / حَتَّى + subjunctive from Chapter 8
Recycled
Time-clause connectors and weak-verb narration from Chapter 9
New
Derived verb forms: Form II, Form V, and Form X built on familiar roots
New
Verbal nouns and active participles of derived verbs

Case-ending recognition and the fixed accusative list continue at the same supported level established in Chapters 8 and 9. No new case or mood system is introduced in this chapter.

المُفْرَدَات — Core Vocabulary

ArabicMeaningForm and Root
دَرَّسَ / يُدَرِّسto teachForm II — root د ر س
طَوَّرَ / يُطَوِّرto develop (something)Form II — root ط و ر
تَعَلَّمَ / يَتَعَلَّمto learnForm V — root ع ل م

اِسْتَمَرَّ / يَسْتَمِرّto continueForm X — root م ر ر

These derived verbs are built on roots you already recognize from earlier vocabulary; the goal of this chapter is to see how the form itself, not just the root, shapes the meaning.

تَرْكِيب — New Grammar

Derived Verb Forms

Arabic verbs belong to a small set of patterned "forms" built on a three-letter root. Form I is the basic form you have used since Volume I. This section introduces three of the most common derived forms and the recurring meanings they tend to carry.

Building Block — Form II: causative or intensive meaning
فَعَّلَ / يُفَعِّل — doubled middle radical

تُدَرِّس أُسْتَاذَتِي اللُّغَة العَرَبِيَّة فِي الجَامِعَة.

My professor teaches Arabic at the university.

Form II typically adds a causative or intensive meaning to the basic root: دَرَسَ (Form I, "to study") becomes دَرَّسَ (Form II, "to teach," literally "to cause to study"). طَوَّرَ, from the same root as تَطَوَّرَ, means "to develop something," while the related Form V verb below means "to develop oneself."

Building Block — Form V: reflexive or "doing it to oneself"
تَفَعَّلَ / يَتَفَعَّل — prefix تَ + doubled middle radical

أَتَعَلَّم اللُّغَة العَرَبِيَّة مُنْذُ سَنَتَيْن.

I have been learning Arabic for two years.

Form V often expresses the idea of doing the Form II action to or for oneself: دَرَّسَ ("to teach [someone]") corresponds to تَعَلَّمَ ("to learn," that is, to teach oneself). تَدَرَّبَ ("to train, practice") follows the same pattern.

Building Block — Form X: seeking, requesting, or considering
اِسْتَفْعَلَ / يَسْتَفْعِل — prefix اِسْتَ

أَسْتَخْدِم مِنَصَّة تَعَلُّم عَلَى الإِنْتِرْنِت كُلّ يَوْم.

I use an online learning platform every day.

Form X often expresses "seeking," "requesting," or "considering something to have a quality": اِسْتَخْدَمَ ("to use," literally close to "to put into service") and اِسْتَمَرَّ ("to continue") are common Form X verbs you will meet often in academic and everyday contexts alike.

  • طَوَّرَت الجَامِعَة دَوْرَة جَدِيدَة لِتَعْلِيم المَهَارَات الرَّقْمِيَّة.The university developed a new course to teach digital skills.Form II, causative
  • يَتَدَرَّب الطُّلَّاب عَلَى النُّطْق كُلّ أُسْبُوع.The students practice pronunciation every week.Form V, reflexive
  • اِسْتَمَرَّت فِي التَّعَلُّم رَغْم صُعُوبَة الدَّوْرَة.She continued learning despite the difficulty of the course.Form X

At this stage, focus on recognizing the causative, reflexive, and "seeking" meanings of Forms II, V, and X and producing the six verbs above accurately; the full system of ten derived forms is developed further across later chapters.

Verbal Nouns and Active Participles

Every Arabic verb has a related verbal noun (a noun describing the action itself) and, usually, an active participle (a noun or adjective describing the person or thing doing the action). This section introduces both for the derived verbs above.

Language Focus — From verb to verbal noun and participle

Form II verbal nouns often follow the pattern تَفْعِيل, as in تَدْرِيس ("teaching," from دَرَّسَ) and تَطْوِير ("development," from طَوَّرَ). Form V verbal nouns often follow the pattern تَفَعُّل, as in تَعَلُّم ("learning," from تَعَلَّمَ) and تَدَرُّب ("training," from تَدَرَّبَ). Form X verbal nouns often follow the pattern اِسْتِفْعَال, as in اِسْتِخْدَام ("use," from اِسْتَخْدَمَ).

Active participles for these forms generally begin with مُ-: مُدَرِّس ("teacher"), مُتَعَلِّم ("learner"), مُتَدَرِّب ("trainee"), and مُسْتَخْدِم ("user").

  • التَّعَلُّم الذَّاتِيّ يَحْتَاج إِلَى وَقْت وَصَبْر.Self-directed learning requires time and patience.verbal noun تَعَلُّم as subject
  • هُوَ مُدَرِّس لُغَة عَرَبِيَّة مَعْرُوف فِي المَدِينَة.He is a well-known Arabic language teacher in the city.active participle مُدَرِّس
  • اِسْتِخْدَام المِنَصَّة سَهْل جِدًّا لِلمُبْتَدِئِين.Using the platform is very easy for beginners.verbal noun اِسْتِخْدَام as subject

Recognizing the verbal noun and active participle of a derived verb lets you build several related, useful words from a single pattern rather than memorizing each as unrelated vocabulary.

Purpose Clauses Revisited

Language Focus — Explaining why you study

Purpose clauses with لِـ, كَي, and حَتَّى followed by the subjunctive, taught in Chapter 8, are especially useful for explaining the reasons behind learning choices. This chapter recycles that system in a new communicative context rather than introducing a new rule.

  • أَتَدَرَّب عَلَى الكِتَابَة يَوْمِيًّا كَي أُطَوِّر مَهَارَاتِي.I practice writing daily so that I develop my skills.Form V + purpose clause with كَي
  • سَجَّلَت فِي الدَّوْرَة لِتَتَعَلَّم مَهَارَة جَدِيدَة.She registered for the course in order to learn a new skill.purpose clause with لِـ + Form V verb

Model Dialogue

Setting: نُور asks her colleague عُمَر about a new online course he is taking.
السِّيَاق: تَسْأَل نُور زَمِيلَهَا عُمَر عَن دَوْرَة جَدِيدَة عَلَى الإِنْتِرْنِت يَأْخُذُهَا.

NOOR سَمِعْت أَنَّك تَتَعَلَّم مَهَارَة جَدِيدَة. مَا هِيَ؟ I heard you're learning a new skill. What is it?
OMAR نَعَم، سَجَّلْت فِي دَوْرَة تَدْرِيبِيَّة عَلَى مِنَصَّة تَعَلُّم إِلِكْتُرُونِيَّة كَي أُطَوِّر مَهَارَاتِي فِي التَّصْمِيم. Yes, I registered for a training course on an e-learning platform so that I develop my design skills.
NOOR مَن يُدَرِّس هَذِهِ الدَّوْرَة؟ Who teaches this course?
OMAR مُدَرِّبَة مَعْرُوفَة فِي هَذَا المَجَال. أَتَدَرَّب عَلَى تَمَارِين عَمَلِيَّة كُلّ أُسْبُوع. A well-known trainer in this field. I practice hands-on exercises every week.
NOOR هَل تَسْتَخْدِم أَدَوَات مُعَيَّنَة؟ Do you use certain tools?
OMAR نَعَم، أَسْتَخْدِم بَرْنَامَجًا مَعَ تَمَارِين تَفَاعُلِيَّة، وَأَحَاوِل أَن أَسْتَمِرّ فِي التَّدَرُّب حَتَّى أُتْقِن هَذِهِ المَهَارَة تَمَامًا. Yes, I use a program with interactive exercises, and I try to keep practicing until I fully master this skill.

أَسْئِلَة الفَهْم — Comprehension questions:

  1. What skill is Omar learning, and why did he register for the course?
  2. Who teaches the course, and how does Omar practice each week?
  3. What is Omar's ultimate goal, according to the last line of the dialogue?

Listening Station

Ask your instructor, a partner, or a text-to-speech tool to read the following short course announcement aloud twice at a moderate pace. Listen without reading along the first time, then answer the questions below.

Listening task

Answer the following questions based on what you hear:

  1. What skill does the new course teach?
  2. What will participants do each week, and why?
  3. What is recommended for getting the best result?

Speaking Station

تَدْرِيب مُوَجَّه — Controlled practice: Naming the skill

With a partner, take turns describing a skill you would like to learn, using at least one Form V verb (تَعَلَّمَ or تَدَرَّبَ) and one purpose clause with كَي or لِـ.

مُهِمَّة تَوَاصُل — Communicative task: Comparing study strategies

In pairs, discuss how each of you studies or practices a skill, using at least one Form II verb (دَرَّسَ or طَوَّرَ) and one Form X verb (اِسْتَخْدَمَ or اِسْتَمَرَّ).

لِلْمُتَعَلِّمِينَ المُسْتَقِلِّينَ — Solo alternative

Record yourself describing a skill you are currently developing, including the strategy you use, the tools you use, and your goal, using at least two derived verbs and one verbal noun from this chapter.

Reading Station

Read the short account below, then answer the questions that follow. As in earlier chapters, some predictable short vowels on familiar words are left unmarked.

A Learner's Note — Sample Text

Comprehension questions:

  1. What skill is the writer learning, and for how long?
  2. Why did the writer register for the course, according to the passage?
  3. Identify one Form V verb and one Form X verb in the passage.

Writing Station

In this station, you will draft a short paragraph of six to eight sentences describing your own approach to learning a skill.

  1. Name the skill. One sentence stating what skill you are learning or would like to learn.
  2. Explain your strategy. One or two sentences using a Form V verb (تَعَلَّمَ or تَدَرَّبَ) to describe how you study or practice.
  3. Mention a tool or resource. One sentence using اِسْتَخْدَمَ to describe a tool, platform, or resource you use.
  4. State your purpose. One sentence using a purpose clause with لِـ, كَي, or حَتَّى, recycled from Chapter 8.
  5. Describe your progress. One or two sentences using a verbal noun (تَقَدُّم, تَعَلُّم, or اِسْتِخْدَام) as a subject.
  6. Close and revise. One closing sentence, then check your draft against the editing checklist below.

قَائِمَة المُرَاجَعَة — Editing checklist:

  • I used at least one Form V verb correctly (تَعَلَّمَ or تَدَرَّبَ).
  • I used at least one Form II or Form X verb correctly.
  • I used at least one verbal noun or active participle from this chapter.
  • I used at least one purpose clause, recycled accurately from Chapter 8.
  • I did not attempt to add case endings on my own beyond the fixed accusative expressions.
  • My paragraph reads as one connected description rather than a list of unrelated facts.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context — Lifelong learning and online platforms

Across many Arabic-speaking contexts, online courses and training platforms have become a common way to build professional and personal skills alongside traditional classroom instruction. Many universities and institutions now offer both in-person and online options, and discussing which format one prefers is a normal, everyday conversation topic among students and professionals alike.

Regional Variation — Words for "course" and "training"

دَوْرَة (تَدْرِيبِيَّة) is a widely understood MSA term for a training course, but some institutions and countries also use بَرْنَامَج تَدْرِيبِيّ or وَرْشَة (عَمَل) for shorter, workshop-style sessions. Learners should expect to recognize these related terms alongside the vocabulary taught in this chapter.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Common Mistake — Confusing Form II and Form V meanings

Error: أُدَرِّس اللُّغَة العَرَبِيَّة فِي الجَامِعَة (used when the speaker means "I am learning Arabic," not "I teach Arabic")

Correction: أَتَعَلَّم اللُّغَة العَرَبِيَّة فِي الجَامِعَة — دَرَّسَ (Form II) means "to teach," while تَعَلَّمَ (Form V) means "to learn"; the two forms are related but not interchangeable.

Common Mistake — Forgetting the doubled middle radical in Form II and Form V

Error: أَتَدَرَب عَلَى النُّطْق (missing the shadda that marks the doubled middle radical)

Correction: أَتَدَرَّب عَلَى النُّطْق — the doubled middle radical, marked with shadda, is a defining feature of Forms II and V and must not be dropped in spelling or pronunciation.

Common Mistake — Treating the verbal noun as identical to the plain infinitive in English

Error: using the verb form where a verbal noun is grammatically required, such as after a preposition.

Correction: اِسْتِخْدَام المِنَصَّة سَهْل. — after certain structures, Arabic requires the verbal noun (اِسْتِخْدَام), not a conjugated verb, functioning as a noun in the sentence.
