Unit III — الدِّرَاسَة وَالعَمَل وَالمُجْتَمَع (Study, Work, and Community) — Chapter 15
15

مُرَاجَعَة ٣: أُشَارِكُ فِي المُجْتَمَعUnit III Assessment: Participating in Community Life

An integrated synthesis of institutional, media, and community communication from Chapters 11-14 · Speak and Write Arabic: Everyday Independence and Connected Communication

Chapter Objectives

This assessment chapter asks you to demonstrate that you can:

  1. Describe a learning goal or skill using verbal nouns and a purpose clause, recycled from Chapter 11.
  2. Write and interpret a formal email about a work responsibility using relative clauses and nominal-style phrasing, recycled from Chapter 12.
  3. Understand simplified news and public-information language, recognizing passive constructions and reported information, recycled from Chapter 13.
  4. Discuss a community issue by giving a cause and a result, recycled from Chapters 6-7 and Chapter 14.
  5. Propose a solution using a real conditional frame, recycled from Chapters 7-9 and Chapter 14.
  6. State a bounded personal opinion supported by exactly one reason, recycled from Chapter 14.
  7. Combine institutional, media, and community language into one connected performance task without introducing any new grammar system.

Assessment Scenario

Chapter 15 closes Unit III. It introduces no new language system. Instead, it asks you to bring together the institutional, professional, media, and community-communication systems developed across Chapters 11 through 14 into a single, connected set of tasks. Imagine that you are helping your local community association prepare materials for a neighborhood meeting: a short account of a skill you are developing, a formal email to a colleague or official, a summary of a news item, and a spoken and written statement about a local issue with a proposed solution and your opinion.

  1. You will review and recycle vocabulary and grammar from Chapters 11 through 14 without new presentation.
  2. You will complete listening, speaking, reading, and writing stations that each draw on more than one chapter.
  3. You will complete an integrated performance task that requires all four skills together.
  4. You will use the self-check review to confirm which systems you can already use independently.

What This Assessment Covers

This chapter is a synthesis checkpoint. It does not introduce a major new grammar, morphology, script, vocabulary-domain, or register system. Every task below draws on material already consolidated in Chapters 11 through 14, and recycles selected systems from earlier chapters where those chapters explicitly authorized ongoing recognition or production. Your performance on this chapter's tasks should reflect independent, connected use of these systems rather than isolated drill.

Ch. 11
Verbal nouns, derived forms, purpose clauses, learning strategies
Ch. 12
Formal email, responsibilities, relative clauses, nominal style
Ch. 13
Simplified news, passive recognition, reported information, source language
Ch. 14
Cause/result, conditionals, bounded opinion frame, percentage recognition

No new grammar, vocabulary domain, or register is introduced in this chapter. Case-ending recognition remains at the same supported level established since Chapters 8 and 9. The opinion frame remains bounded to one reason, exactly as introduced in Chapter 14; the fuller opinion, comparison, and justification system begins in Chapter 18.

المُفْرَدَات — Cumulative Vocabulary Review

Cumulative Vocabulary Review

The following table gathers key vocabulary from Chapters 11 through 14. Use it to prepare for the stations below; no new items appear in this chapter.

All items above were introduced and developed in their listed chapters. This chapter recycles them; it does not add new metadata or new plural patterns.

Cumulative Grammar Review

The four boxes below summarize the systems this assessment draws on. Each is a consolidation reminder, not a new presentation.

Review — Purpose clauses with a verbal noun (Ch. 11)

لِـ + verbal noun, or لِكَي + subjunctive clause, expresses purpose: stating why you are developing a skill or pursuing a goal.

Review — Relative clauses in formal correspondence (Ch. 12)

الَّذِي / الَّتِي / الَّذِينَ introduce a relative clause describing a person, task, or responsibility already mentioned, common in formal email.

Review — Reported information and passive recognition (Ch. 13)
حَسَب + source noun, ...؛ قَالَ/ذَكَرَ/أَعْلَنَ + reported clause — according to..., .../said/mentioned/announced...

حَسَب التَّقْرِير، تُقَام الفَعَالِيَّة يَوْم الخَمِيس.

According to the report, the event is held on Thursday. (passive recognized, agent unstated)

Review — Cause, condition, and bounded opinion (Ch. 14)

If the municipality increases the number of buses, congestion will decrease. In my opinion, this is a good solution because it encourages people to use public transportation.

Listening Assessment

Ask your instructor, a partner, or a text-to-speech tool to read the following short passage aloud twice at a moderate pace. Listen without reading along the first time, then answer the questions below.

Listening task

Answer the following questions based on what you hear:

  1. What is the source of the information in this passage, and what did the head of the association say?
  2. What percentage of residents filed complaints, and why?
  3. What condition and result does the passage describe as a possible next step?
  4. What opinion is expressed at the end, and what reason supports it?

Speaking Assessment

تَدْرِيب مُوَجَّه — Controlled practice: A skill and a purpose

With a partner, take turns describing a skill you are developing and your purpose for developing it, recycling the verbal-noun and purpose-clause language from Chapter 11.

مُهِمَّة تَوَاصُل — Communicative task: Reporting and proposing

In pairs, report a piece of news about your community using حَسَب to cite a source, then propose a solution to a related issue using إِذَا...، فَـ..., and close with فِي رَأْيِي... لِأَنَّ....

لِلْمُتَعَلِّمِينَ المُسْتَقِلِّينَ — Solo alternative

Record yourself presenting all four elements in sequence: a learning goal with its purpose, a brief report of community news with a cited source, a community issue with its cause and a proposed conditional solution, and a bounded opinion with one reason.

Reading Assessment

Read the short notice below, then answer the questions that follow. As in earlier chapters, some predictable short vowels on familiar words are left unmarked.

A Community Association Notice — Sample Text

Comprehension questions:

  1. Who issued this notice, and what will the meeting discuss?
  2. Identify the relative clause that describes the municipal representative, and explain what it adds.
  3. Identify the condition and its result concerning the parking congestion issue.
  4. State the opinion expressed at the end and the one reason that supports it.

Writing Assessment

In this station, you will write a short, connected text of six to eight sentences that combines material from Chapters 11 through 14.

  1. State a goal. One sentence naming a skill or goal relevant to community participation, with a purpose clause (Ch. 11).
  2. Open a formal message. One sentence addressing a colleague or official about a responsibility, using a relative clause (Ch. 12).
  3. Cite a source. One sentence using حَسَب to report a piece of community news (Ch. 13).
  4. Give a cause. One sentence using بِسَبَب to explain a community issue (Ch. 14).
  5. Propose a condition and consequence. One sentence using إِذَا...، فَـ... (Ch. 14).
  6. Close with your opinion. One sentence using فِي رَأْيِي... لِأَنَّ... with exactly one reason (Ch. 14).
  7. Review your draft against the editing checklist below.

قَائِمَة المُرَاجَعَة — Editing checklist:

  • I used a verbal noun and purpose clause correctly, recycled from Chapter 11.
  • I used a relative clause appropriately in a formal context, recycled from Chapter 12.
  • I cited a source using حَسَب, recycled from Chapter 13.
  • I used بِسَبَب and إِذَا...، فَـ... correctly, recycled from Chapter 14.
  • I used فِي رَأْيِي... لِأَنَّ... with exactly one supporting reason.
  • I did not attempt to add case endings on my own beyond the fixed accusative expressions.
  • My text reads as one connected passage rather than a list of unrelated sentences.

Culture and Communication Review

Culture in Context — Community associations across Arabic-speaking regions

Neighborhood and civic associations take different forms and carry different levels of formal authority in different Arabic-speaking cities and countries. The vocabulary and institutional roles in this chapter reflect a general MSA register that learners can adapt as they encounter the specific institutions of a particular country or city.

Regional Variation — Institutional and correspondence terms

As in Chapters 12 through 14, institutional titles, correspondence conventions, and local-government terms may vary by country. This chapter uses widely understood MSA terms; learners should expect some variation when working with a specific country's documents.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Common Mistake — Losing the connector chain in a combined text

Error: writing separate, disconnected sentences that each contain a correct structure but do not read as one connected passage.

Correction: use the connectors themselves — حَسَب, بِسَبَب, لِذَلِك, إِذَا...، فَـ..., فِي رَأْيِي... لِأَنَّ... — to link each sentence to the one before it, as modeled in the reading passages above.

Common Mistake — Reintroducing an unbounded opinion structure

Error: adding comparisons, counterarguments, or more than one reason after فِي رَأْيِي, treating the assessment as an opportunity to expand the system early.

Correction: keep the opinion frame bounded to exactly one reason, as established in Chapter 14. The fuller system is introduced in Chapter 18, not synthesized early here.

Common Mistake — Attempting full case-ending production

Error: adding spontaneous full iʿrāb endings throughout the writing or speaking task, beyond the fixed accusative expressions already practiced.

Correction: continue relying on natural pause forms and the supported case-recognition level established since Chapters 8 and 9; full productive case control is not assessed at this stage.

Self-Check Review

Section A — الهَدَف وَالمَهَارَة (Goal and Skill)

1. Write one sentence describing a skill you want to develop and your purpose for developing it.

Section B — رِسَالَة رَسْمِيَّة (Formal Message)

1. Write one sentence opening a formal message about a responsibility, using a relative clause with الَّذِي or الَّتِي.

Section C — الخَبَر وَالمَصْدَر (News and Source)

1. Write one sentence reporting a piece of community news, citing a source with حَسَب.

Section D — المُشْكِلَة وَالحَلّ وَالرَّأْي (Problem, Solution, and Opinion)

1. Write a cause-and-result sentence, a condition-and-consequence sentence, and a bounded opinion sentence about one community issue.

مُرَاجَعَة تَرَاكُمِيَّة — Cumulative review

Complete the short exchange below, drawing on Chapters 11 through 14.

أ: مَاذَا تَفْعَل الجَمْعِيَّة الأَهْلِيَّة هَذَا الشَّهْر؟

ب: ______________________________________ (report the news, citing a source with حَسَب)

أ: وَمَا هُوَ رَأْيُكَ فِي هَذَا؟

ب: ______________________________________ (propose a condition and consequence with إِذَا...، فَـ..., then add فِي رَأْيِي... لِأَنَّ...)

Integrated Performance Task

مُهِمَّة الأَدَاء المُتَكَامِلَة

مُشَارَكَتِي فِي مُجْتَمَعِي — My Participation in My Community

Complete both parts below.

  • Written: Write a connected text of six to eight sentences that (1) states a skill or goal with a purpose clause, (2) opens a short formal message about a responsibility using a relative clause, (3) reports a piece of community news citing a source with حَسَب, (4) gives a cause and result for a community issue, (5) proposes a solution with إِذَا...، فَـ..., and (6) closes with a bounded opinion using فِي رَأْيِي... لِأَنَّ....
  • Spoken: Present the same content orally, as if briefing a neighbor who was unable to attend a community meeting.

Assessment focus: accurate, connected use of the verbal-noun/purpose-clause system from Chapter 11; the relative-clause and nominal-style correspondence system from Chapter 12; source citation and passive/reported-information recognition from Chapter 13; and cause, condition, and bounded-opinion language from Chapter 14 — combined into one coherent text rather than presented as isolated sentences. No new grammar, vocabulary domain, or register is assessed.

Answer Key

Listening Assessment

  • The information comes from a statement by the community association; the head of the association said that about forty percent of residents filed complaints.
  • About forty percent of residents filed complaints because of the shortage of trash bins.
  • If the municipality approves the proposal, new bins will be placed next month.
  • The opinion expressed is that the proposal is useful because it addresses the problem quickly.

Reading Assessment — Comprehension

  1. The community association issued the notice; the meeting will discuss residents' responsibilities toward the neighborhood environment.
  2. الَّذِي يُشْرِف عَلَى مَشْرُوع الحَدَائِق الجَدِيدَة identifies which municipal representative will speak, by describing his role in the new parks project.
  3. Condition and result: إِذَا حَضَر عَدَد كَافٍ مِن السُّكَّان، فَسَتُنَاقَش أَيْضًا مُشْكِلَة اِزْدِحَام السَّيَّارَات صَبَاحًا.
  4. Opinion: attending the meeting is important because it allows residents to participate in decisions that affect their lives.

Self-Check Review — Model responses

Other well-formed, accurate answers combining the required systems are equally acceptable throughout this section.

Cumulative Review — Model responses for Speaker B

Exact wording will vary. Check that a source citation, a cause or condition with its result, and a bounded opinion with one reason are all present and accurately formed.

Looking Ahead

مَا الَّذِي تَسْتَطِيعُ فِعْلَهُ الآن — What you can do now

You can now combine goal-and-purpose language, formal correspondence, source citation, and community problem-solving into one connected spoken or written text. This completes Unit III. Unit IV moves into narration, everyday media interpretation, opinion and preference, and future planning as you build toward the Volume II final portfolio.

تَجَارِب وَقَصَص مِنَ الحَيَاةChapter 16: Experiences and Life Stories

Chapter 16 opens Unit IV and introduces extended narration, sequence, reaction, and evaluation, building on the perfect, كَانَ, and biographical sequencing consolidated in Chapter 4 and recycled throughout the volume.
