مُرَاجَعَة ١: خِطَاب رَسْمِيّ وَتَحْلِيلChapter 5: Unit I Assessment

An integrated formal institutional and argumentative discourse task · Speak and Write Arabic: Professional, Academic, Media, and Institutional Arabic

Chapter Overview

This chapter is a synthesis checkpoint. It introduces no new grammar, morphology, vocabulary domain, or register system. Instead, it brings together everything Unit I has built: the register control and disciplined paragraph development of Chapter 1, the institutional language, passive voice, and nominalization of Chapter 2, the advanced comparison and classification of Chapter 3, and the thesis, concession, and counterargument patterns of Chapter 4. You will read, listen to, discuss, and write one integrated case built around a single institutional scenario, drawing on all four chapters at once. Your work in this chapter demonstrates readiness for Unit II's move into media and public-issue Arabic.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Read and interpret an extended formal institutional text that classifies options, compares them, and argues for one.
  2. Identify passive constructions, nominalizations, and formal register choices within a connected institutional text.
  3. Listen to a formal spoken exchange and extract its classification, comparison, thesis, concession, and counterargument-response.
  4. Speak in sustained formal register to defend a position, respond to an objection, and answer follow-up questions.
  5. Write a complete formal recommendation report that classifies options, compares them, states a thesis, concedes a valid point, and answers a counterargument.
  6. Self-assess accuracy, register consistency, and cumulative control across all four chapters of Unit I.

Opening Communication Scenario

The research institute's director has asked أَمَل to prepare the final version of her recommendation, incorporating the institutional framing from Chapter 2, the classification and comparison from Chapter 3, and the thesis and counterargument-response from Chapter 4, into a single formal report. She must also defend the report in a short meeting and answer questions from colleagues, including one who remains unconvinced.

  1. You will read an extended version of the institute's case that classifies, compares, and argues in one continuous formal text.
  2. You will listen to a meeting in which the report is discussed, questioned, and defended.
  3. You will write your own full recommendation report and defend it aloud, integrating every tool from Unit I.
Assessment chapter notice: This chapter introduces no major new language system. Every grammar pattern, vocabulary item, and register feature below was taught in Chapters 1-4 and is being recycled here at a consolidated (C) or synthesis (A) status, exactly as authorized by the Volume IV Language Systems Progression Matrices. Nothing here should be treated as new instruction.
مُرَاجَعَة المُفْرَدَات — Cumulative Vocabulary Review

Cumulative Vocabulary Review

The table below regroups core vocabulary from Chapters 1 through 4 by function, so that you can review it as one connected toolkit before the integrated tasks.

مُرَاجَعَة النُّطْق — Pronunciation Review

Pronunciation Review: Sustaining Formal Connected Reading

Pronunciation Note — Reading a full argumentative paragraph aloud

This chapter asks you to read and speak longer stretches of formal MSA than any single earlier chapter, so the pause forms, phrase grouping, and the concession pivot on غَيْر أَنَّ and إِلَّا أَنَّ from Chapter 4 must now be sustained across several connected sentences rather than a single sentence. Read for meaning in phrase groups, let your pitch mark the turn from classification to comparison to thesis to concession to conclusion, and keep a steady, unhurried pace appropriate to a formal spoken presentation.

التَّرْكِيب — Grammar and Register Synthesis

Grammar and Register Synthesis

No new grammar pattern is introduced here. This section reviews, side by side, the four patterns that must now work together in a single connected text: institutional passive/nominalization (Chapter 2), classification and comparison (Chapter 3), and thesis, concession, and counterargument-response (Chapter 4).

Review Pattern — Institutional passive and nominalization (Chapter 2)
يُصَنَّف ... ضِمْن ... (... is classified among ...)
The passive keeps institutional writing impersonal and focused on the process or category rather than on who performed the action.
يُصَنَّف مَرْكَز البُحُوث ضِمْن الخِيَارَات الأَكْثَر مَوَارِد بَيْن المَرَافِق المُتَاحَة.
The research center is classified among the options with more resources among the available facilities.
Review Pattern — Comparison (Chapter 3)
بِالمُقَارَنَة مَع ..., ... أَكْثَر / أَقَلّ ... (in comparison with ..., ... is more/less ...)
Comparative structures with the elative connect one option's evidence directly to another's, supporting the classification above.
بِالمُقَارَنَة مَع المَكْتَبَة، يُوَفِّر المَرْكَز مَوَارِد أَكْثَر لِلبَاحِثِين الزَّائِرِين.
In comparison with the library, the center provides more resources for visiting researchers.
Review Pattern — Thesis, concession, and counterargument (Chapter 4)
تَتَمَثَّل أُطْرُوحَة ... فِي أَنَّ ...؛ صَحِيحٌ أَنَّ ...، غَيْر أَنَّ ...؛ قَدْ يَعْتَرِض البَعْض بِأَنَّ ...، وَلَكِنَّ الوَاقِع أَنَّ ...
These three linked patterns move a formal text from stating a position, through a genuine concession, to a reasoned answer to an objection — the backbone of the integrated report in this chapter.
The thesis of this report consists in the fact that the institute should expand the research center. It is true that expansion is costly, however the benefits outweigh the cost. Some may object that the library is sufficient, but the reality is that demand is increasing.

Full register chain, from classification to conclusion:

  • يُصَنَّف المَرْكَز ضِمْن الخِيَارَات الأَكْثَر مَوَارِد.Classification (Chapter 3, recycling Chapter 2 passive)
  • بِالمُقَارَنَة مَع المَكْتَبَة، يُوَفِّر المَرْكَز مَوَارِد أَكْثَر.Comparison (Chapter 3)
  • تَتَمَثَّل أُطْرُوحَة هَذَا التَّقْرِير فِي أَنَّ عَلَى المَعْهَد أَن يُوَسِّعهُ.Thesis (Chapter 4)
  • صَحِيحٌ أَنَّ التَّوَسُّع مُكْلِف، غَيْر أَنَّ الفَوَائِد تَفُوق التَّكْلِفَة.Concession and return (Chapter 4)
  • وَبِنَاءً عَلَى مَا سَبَق، يُوصَى بِالمُوَافَقَة.Conclusion (Chapter 4)

Model Dialogue

أَمَل presents her final report in a short meeting with the institute's director, سَامِي, who raises a lingering objection.

سَامِي
كَيْف يُصَنَّف مَرْكَز البُحُوث بِالمُقَارَنَة مَع المَكْتَبَة؟How is the research center classified in comparison with the library?
أَمَل
يُصَنَّف المَرْكَز ضِمْن الخِيَارَات الأَكْثَر مَوَارِد، وَبِالمُقَارَنَة مَع المَكْتَبَة، فَإِنَّهُ يُوَفِّر مَوَارِد أَكْثَر لِلبَاحِثِين الزَّائِرِين.The center is classified among the options with more resources, and in comparison with the library, it provides more resources for visiting researchers.
سَامِي
إِذَن، مَا هِيَ أُطْرُوحَة تَقْرِيرِك؟So, what is your report's thesis?
أَمَل
تَتَمَثَّل أُطْرُوحَة التَّقْرِير فِي أَنَّ عَلَى المَعْهَد أَن يُوَسِّع المَرْكَز خِلَال العَام القَادِم. صَحِيحٌ أَنَّ التَّوَسُّع مُكْلِف، غَيْر أَنَّ الفَوَائِد المُتَوَقَّعَة تَفُوق هَذِهِ التَّكْلِفَة.The report's thesis consists in the fact that the institute should expand the center next year. It is true that expansion is costly; however, the expected benefits outweigh this cost.
سَامِي
لَكِنَّنِي مَا زِلْت أَعْتَقِد أَنَّ المَكْتَبَة تَكْفِي حَاجَتنَا الحَالِيَّة.But I still think the library meets our current needs.
أَمَل
قَدْ يَعْتَرِض البَعْض بِهَذَا الرَّأْي، وَلَكِنَّ الوَاقِع أَنَّ عَدَد البَاحِثِينَ الزَّائِرِين يَتَزَايَد كُلّ عَام، وَبِنَاءً عَلَى مَا سَبَق، أُوصِي بِالمُوَافَقَة عَلَى التَّوْسِيع.Some may object with this view, but the reality is that the number of visiting researchers increases every year, and based on the foregoing, I recommend approving the expansion.

Guided Practice

تَمْرِين ١ — Chaining the full register sequence. Put the following sentences in the correct order to form one coherent argumentative paragraph: classification, comparison, thesis, concession-and-return, conclusion.

Identifying the system. For each underlined pattern in the ordered paragraph above, name the chapter that introduced it (1, 2, 3, or 4).

Listening Assessment

Ask your instructor, a partner, or a text-to-speech tool to read the following short meeting excerpt aloud twice at a moderate, careful pace. Listen for the classification, comparison, thesis, concession, and counterargument-response before answering the questions.

Listening task

  1. How is the research center classified, and how does it compare with the library?
  2. What is the thesis of the report?
  3. What point does the report concede, and what does it say in return?
  4. What counterargument is raised, and how does أَمَل answer it?

Speaking Assessment

تَدْرِيب مُوَجَّه — Controlled practice: The full sequence aloud

Practice saying the five-part sequence — classification, comparison, thesis, concession-and-return, conclusion — aloud as one connected paragraph, maintaining consistent formal register and correct phrase-group pausing throughout.

مُهِمَّة تَوَاصُل — Communicative task: Defend a recommendation

With a partner or instructor, present a short formal recommendation on an institutional question of your choice. Classify at least two options, compare them, state your thesis, concede one valid point, and answer at least one follow-up objection your partner raises on the spot.

لِلْمُتَعَلِّمِينَ المُسْتَقِلِّينَ — Solo alternative

Record yourself presenting the full sequence on a topic of your choice, then record a second take in which you answer an objection you write out for yourself in advance.

Reading Assessment

Read the extended formal report below, which integrates institutional framing, classification, comparison, thesis, concession, and counterargument-response into one continuous text. Predictable short vowels on familiar words remain lightly marked, consistent with the reading level established across Unit I.

أَسْئِلَة الفَهْم — Comprehension questions:

  1. Into what three categories are the institute's facilities classified, and where does each facility in the report fall?
  2. What comparison does the report draw between the center and the library, and what conclusion does it support?
  3. State the report's thesis in your own words.
  4. Identify the sentence that concedes a point, and the sentence that answers a counterargument.
  5. What final recommendation does the report make?

Writing Assessment — A Full Recommendation Report

In this assessment task, you will write one complete formal report that integrates every tool from Unit I: institutional framing, classification, comparison, thesis, evidence, concession, and counterargument-response.

  1. Step 1 — Frame the report institutionally. Open with a formal salutation and state the report's purpose, recycling the institutional register of Chapter 2.
  2. Step 2 — Classify and compare. Classify at least two options into categories, then compare them directly, recycling the classification and comparison patterns of Chapter 3.
  3. Step 3 — State your thesis. Use تَتَمَثَّل أُطْرُوحَة هَذَا التَّقْرِير فِي أَنَّ to state your position clearly.
  4. Step 4 — Support it with sequenced evidence. Use أَوَّلًا and ثَانِيًا to present at least two pieces of evidence, including one statistic.
  5. Step 5 — Concede a point and answer a counterargument. Use صَحِيحٌ أَنَّ ... ، غَيْر أَنَّ and قَدْ يَعْتَرِض البَعْض بِأَنَّ ... ، وَلَكِنَّ الوَاقِع أَنَّ.
  6. Step 6 — State your conclusion. Use بِنَاءً عَلَى مَا سَبَق، يُوصَى بِأَن to close with a clear recommendation.
  7. Review your report against the checklist below.

قَائِمَة المُرَاجَعَة — Full report checklist:

  • I opened with correct institutional formal register.
  • I classified at least two options and compared them clearly.
  • I stated a clear thesis using the formal pattern.
  • I supported my thesis with at least two pieces of evidence, marked with sequence connectors.
  • I conceded a genuine point using the concession-and-return pattern.
  • I introduced and answered a counterargument without abandoning my position.
  • I closed with a clear, connected recommendation.
  • Register is consistent throughout, and I did not introduce any system beyond Unit I.

Culture and Communication

Culture in Context — Formal reports as collaborative, not adversarial, documents

A formal institutional report that classifies options, concedes a genuine cost, and answers an objection is generally read as a collaborative contribution to a shared decision, not as a debate to be won. Writers who integrate an opposing colleague's concern respectfully, as in the model dialogue's exchange between أَمَل and سَامِي, are typically seen as strengthening their institutional standing rather than weakening their case.

Regional Variation — Formal meeting conventions

The way an objection is voiced in a meeting, and the degree of directness expected in a spoken response, can vary across institutions and countries. Some settings favor a fairly direct spoken reply, similar to the written وَلَكِنَّ الوَاقِع أَنَّ, while others favor more indirect spoken hedges before returning to the same point. Both patterns are compatible with formal MSA; observing how colleagues in a given institution phrase their own responses remains the most reliable guide.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Common Mistake — Combining systems without connecting them

Error: stating a classification, a comparison, a thesis, and a conclusion as four disconnected sentences with no cohesion markers between them.

Correction: connect each stage explicitly, as in the model report, so that classification leads into comparison, comparison supports the thesis, and the concession and counterargument-response lead naturally into the conclusion.

Common Mistake — Dropping register mid-report

Error: opening with formal institutional register and then shifting into a conversational tone, such as أَنَا أَعْتَقِد إِنَّهُ لَازِم, partway through the report.

Correction: maintain the formal argumentative register established in Chapter 4 throughout the entire report, including in the conclusion: وَبِنَاءً عَلَى مَا سَبَق، يُوصَى بِأَن ...

Common Mistake — Treating the concession as optional under time pressure

Error: omitting the concession entirely in a longer integrated report because the writer feels the thesis and evidence are enough on their own.

Correction: a full integrated report, like the one assessed in this chapter, must still include a genuine concession followed by a return to the thesis; length does not exempt a report from this structure.

Chapter Summary

This chapter brought together the four chapters of Unit I into one connected performance. You reviewed formal register and disciplined paragraphing from Chapter 1, institutional passive and nominalization from Chapter 2, classification and comparison from Chapter 3, and thesis, concession, and counterargument-response from Chapter 4, and you practiced combining all four into a single coherent institutional report and its spoken defense. No new grammar, vocabulary, or register system was introduced. Unit II now moves this same register control toward reading and analyzing how others construct arguments in media and public discourse.

Chapter Review

Section A — Structure Recognition

1. In the Reading Assessment report, identify the sentence that classifies the facilities and the sentence that draws the comparison.

2. In the Model Dialogue, identify the sentence where أَمَل answers سَامِي's objection.

Section B — Self-Assessment

1. Of the four systems reviewed in this chapter (register, institutional passive, comparison/classification, argument), which do you control most confidently, and which needs more practice before Unit II?

2. Choose one sentence from your Writing Assessment report and explain which chapter's system it demonstrates and why it is correctly formed.

مُرَاجَعَة تَرَاكُمِيَّة — Cumulative review

This chapter recycles, at consolidated and assessed status, the register control and paragraph development of Chapter 1, the institutional language and passive/nominalization of Chapter 2, the comparison and classification of Chapter 3, and the thesis, concession, and counterargument-response of Chapter 4. No system is promoted beyond its authorized Unit I status. Unit II will build on this same foundation with media and public-issue Arabic.

Unit I Performance Task

مُهِمَّة الوَحْدَة — Unit I Integrated Performance Task

تَقْرِير تَوْصِيَة كَامِل — A Full Recommendation Report and Defense

Complete both parts below.

  • Written: Write a complete formal recommendation report (10-14 sentences) that opens with institutional framing, classifies at least two options, compares them, states a thesis, supports it with two sequenced pieces of evidence including one statistic, concedes one valid point, answers one counterargument, and closes with a clear recommendation.
  • Spoken: Present your report aloud to a partner or instructor in sustained formal register, and respond to at least two follow-up objections they raise.

Assessment focus: consistent formal institutional register from opening to close; a clear classification and comparison; a precisely stated thesis; sequenced, connected evidence; a genuine concession followed by a return to the thesis; an impersonal counterargument answered convincingly; overall cohesion connecting all four chapters into one text.

Answer Key

Guided Practice

Exercise 1 (correct order): 2, 5, 4, 3, 1 — that is:

Exercise 2 (model answers): Classification and comparison — Chapter 3; thesis — Chapter 4; concession-and-return — Chapter 4; conclusion connector — Chapter 4, building on Chapter 3's evidence framing.

Reading Assessment — Comprehension

  1. Facilities are classified into resource-limited, medium, and resource-rich categories; the research center falls in the resource-rich category, and the university library falls in the medium category.
  2. The report compares the center's more specialized resources and faster database access to the library's resources, supporting the conclusion that the center should be expanded.
  3. Model answer: the institute should expand the research center next year.
  4. Concession: صَحِيحٌ أَنَّ التَّوَسُّع يَتَطَلَّب مِيزَانِيَّة إِضَافِيَّة. Counterargument-response: قَدْ يَعْتَرِض البَعْض بِأَنَّ المَكْتَبَة تَكْفِي ... وَلَكِنَّ الوَاقِع أَنَّ الطَّلَب مُسْتَمِرّ فِي التَّزَايُد.
  5. It recommends approving the expansion of the center as soon as possible.

Listening Assessment

  • The center is classified among the resource-rich options and provides more resources than the library.
  • The thesis is that the institute should expand the research center next year.
  • The report concedes that expansion requires an additional budget, then responds that the expected benefits outweigh this cost in the long term.
  • A colleague objects that the library currently meets researcher needs; أَمَل answers that visiting-researcher numbers keep increasing every year.

Chapter Review — Model responses

Section B: Open-ended self-assessment; any honest, specific response that names one of the four Unit I systems is acceptable.

Looking Ahead

مَا الَّذِي تَسْتَطِيعُ فِعْلَهُ الآن — What you can do now

You can now produce one fully integrated formal institutional report that classifies, compares, states a thesis, concedes a point, and answers a counterargument, and you can defend that report aloud in sustained formal register. This completes Unit I. Unit II turns this same register control toward reading media critically and analyzing how other writers construct exactly this kind of argument in public discourse.

الفَصْل السَّادِسChapter 6: Reading Media Critically

Chapter 6 opens Unit II — الإِعْلَام وَالقَضَايَا العَامَّة — and introduces headline style, framing, source voice, and report structure, building directly on the formal register and argumentative tools consolidated in this chapter.
