Neu anfangen
Chapter Objectives
Welcome to Volume II. This chapter does not introduce a major new grammar system. Instead, it asks you to reintroduce yourself with more detail than you could in Volume I, and it gives you a diagnostic review of the case, verb-position, and tense systems you will keep building throughout this volume. Think of Chapter 1 as a bridge: everything here should feel familiar, but you will use it with more independence and more connected sentences than before.
By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:
- Reintroduce yourself with richer personal, academic, and professional detail.
- Summarize your current life, studies, work, and near-future goals.
- Use nominative, accusative, and controlled dative forms in a diagnostic self-check.
- Review and apply the present perfect (Perfekt) and modal verb brackets in connected speech and writing.
- Confirm control of verb-second order and question word order across longer sentences.
- Read short learner biographies and identify their personal, practical, and narrative content.
- Write an updated learning profile that states concrete goals for Volume II.
Opening Scenario
A new term is beginning. Mia, Lukas, and Anna are back together after a break, and their instructor asks everyone to introduce themselves again — not as complete beginners this time, but as learners who already have a year of German behind them. Mia has changed apartments, Lukas has finished his internship in Freiburg, and Anna is preparing to move to Berlin. Before the group can move forward into new material, they take stock of what they already know and set goals for the new volume. You will do the same: update your own profile and diagnose where your German stands today.
- Skim back through your Volume I notes or the Chapter 20 portfolio you completed. You do not need to reread everything in detail — just refresh your memory of the vocabulary and structures you used most.
- As you work through this chapter, notice which structures feel automatic and which ones need more review. Nothing in this chapter is new; it is designed to confirm what you can already do.
Volume I Review Roadmap
This table summarizes the systems this chapter recycles and where you first met them. It is a review reference, not new material.
| System | Where it comes from | How it appears here |
|---|---|---|
| Nominative and accusative | Volume I, Chapters 1–10 | subject and object roles in personal and practical statements |
| Controlled dative | Volume I, Chapters 6–15 | fixed location and indirect-object formulas |
| Present perfect (Perfekt) | Volume I, Chapters 16–19 | narrating recent events and changes since last term |
| Modal verb brackets | Volume I, Chapters 11–15 | stating goals, plans, and abilities |
| Verb-second order and questions | Volume I, Chapters 1–19 | diagnostic self-check across longer sentences |
No system on this list is new to you. Chapter 2 begins Volume II's first genuinely new content: dative location expansion and two-way prepositions.
Core Vocabulary — Aktuelles und Ziele
This chapter's vocabulary supports personal updates, current activities, and near-future goals. All items below are review or natural extensions of Volume I vocabulary.
Personal Update
- der Umzug, die Umzüge — the move (of residence)
- die Veränderung, die Veränderungen — the change
- seit + dative — since / for (a period of time)
- immer noch — still
- nicht mehr — no longer
Studies and Work
- das Praktikum, die Praktika — the internship
- der Abschluss, die Abschlüsse — the degree, completion
- die Erfahrung, die Erfahrungen — the experience
- vor kurzem — recently
- fertig sein mit + dative — to be finished with
Goals and Plans
- das Ziel, die Ziele — the goal
- vorhaben (separable) — to plan, intend
- sich verbessern — to improve (oneself)
- dieses Semester / dieses Jahr — this semester / this year
- hoffentlich — hopefully
Classroom Review Language
- wiederholen — to review, repeat
- sich erinnern an + accusative — to remember
- der Unterschied, die Unterschiede — the difference
- diesmal — this time
- wie gesagt — as I said
All plural and article information above is active; use it exactly as shown in your own sentences.
Pronunciation Focus
Before moving into new content, this chapter reviews two priorities from Volume I: the long/short vowel contrast and final devoicing. Compare Ziel (long ie) with Zimmer (short i), and notice that Abschluss ends with a voiceless s-sound even though it is spelled with ss.
Also review word stress in separable-prefix verbs: VORhaben stresses the prefix, while inseparable-prefix verbs such as verBESsern stress the verb stem, not the prefix.
Once you have written your personal update later in this chapter, read it aloud and listen for final devoicing on words like Abschluss and Praktikum, and for correct stress on vorhaben and sich verbessern.
Grammar and Sentence Patterns — Diagnostic Review
Nominative, accusative, and controlled dative
Use this diagnostic to confirm your case control before Volume II expands the dative system in Chapter 2. Every active noun should still appear with its gender and plural.
Review auxiliary choice: motion and change-of-state verbs (fahren, gehen, werden) take sein; most other verbs take haben. In this chapter, use the Perfekt to describe what has changed since Volume I ended.
- Ich bin umgezogen. — I moved (residence).
- Ich habe mein Praktikum beendet. — I finished my internship.
- Wir haben uns lange nicht gesehen. — We haven't seen each other in a long time.
Diagnostic Practice
- Combine the following into one sentence with correct case: ich / haben / ein neu- Zimmer.
- Rewrite starting with Letztes Jahr: Ich habe viel gearbeitet.
- Build a sentence with a modal bracket: ich / wollen / mein Deutsch / verbessern.
- Form a yes/no question from: Du bist umgezogen.
- Form a question-word question asking where someone lives now.
Model Dialogue
Mia and Anna catch up before the first class of the new term.
Mia und Anna treffen sich vor dem Kurs.
Comprehension — Model Dialogue
1. Was ist bei Mia neu?
2. Wie war Mias Sommer?
3. Was ist Mias Ziel für dieses Semester?
4. Was hat Anna schon organisiert, und was fehlt noch?
5. Find one example each of a Perfekt form and a modal verb bracket in the dialogue.
Guided Practice
Practice A — Case Diagnostic
Fill in the correct article and, where needed, case ending. Answers appear in the answer key.
- Ich habe ___ neu___ Kurs. (ein / neu-)
- Wir helfen ___ neu___ Studentin. (die / neu-)
- Ich wohne jetzt in ___ klein___ Wohnung. (eine / klein-)
- Mein Bruder besucht ___ Universität. (die)
Practice B — Perfekt or Modal Bracket
Complete each sentence with the correct form of the verb in parentheses.
- Ich ___ letztes Jahr viel ___ . (arbeiten, Perfekt)
- Sie ___ ihr Deutsch ___ . (verbessern wollen, modal bracket)
- Wir ___ schon lange nicht mehr ___ . (sich sehen, Perfekt)
Listening Practice
Ask a partner, instructor, or text-to-speech tool to read the following script at a natural pace. Listen once for the general picture, then again for the details.
Lukas' Update (Listening Script)
Hallo zusammen!
1. Was hat sich bei Lukas verändert?
2. Worauf möchte sich Lukas dieses Semester konzentrieren?
3. Warum hofft Lukas, dass sie sich öfter treffen?
Speaking Practice
Aktivität 1: Diagnostic Interview
Work with a partner. Partner A interviews Partner B about what has changed since Volume I and what their goals are for this semester. Then switch roles.
Partner A — Interviewer
- Was ist bei dir neu?
- Was hast du letztes Jahr gemacht?
- Was möchtest du dieses Semester erreichen?
Partner B — Responding
- use at least one Perfekt form
- use at least one modal verb bracket
- use at least one dative phrase
Solo alternative: Record a one-minute self-interview answering all three questions.
Bewertungshinweise — Speaking Criteria
- Comprehensible, connected sentences about personal change and goals.
- Correct auxiliary selection in the Perfekt.
- Correct modal verb bracket order.
- Stable case use in familiar vocabulary.
Reading Practice
Read the short learner biography below and answer the questions that follow.
1. Was hat Sofia letztes Jahr gelernt?
2. Was ist Sofias Ziel für dieses Semester?
3. Was ist bei Sofia neu?
Writing Workshop — Updated Learning Profile
This workshop guides you toward the chapter's main writing task: an updated personal and learning profile.
- List what has changed. Note two or three things that are different since Volume I (residence, work, studies, routine).
- Draft a personal update using at least two Perfekt forms.
- State your goals for this semester using at least one modal verb bracket.
- Check your case use in every noun phrase against the diagnostic patterns above.
- Revise using the checklist below.
Checkliste — Editing Checklist:
- At least two Perfekt forms with correct auxiliary selection appear.
- At least one modal verb bracket appears with correct clause-final infinitive.
- Nominative, accusative, and dative forms are used correctly with familiar nouns.
- Verb-second order is consistent in every main clause.
- All nouns are capitalized; umlauts and ß are used correctly.
Culture and Communication
Catching up after a break is a common social routine across German-speaking communities, though how much personal detail people share, and how directly, can vary by relationship, region, and individual preference. Some learners may prefer to keep their update brief and factual; others may share more. Both approaches are natural German communication.
As in Volume I, remember that institutions, vocabulary, and pronunciation may vary across Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Luxembourg. Mia's mention of a possible internship in Austria is a reminder that Volume II will keep labeling DACH variation as it appears.
Common Mistakes to Review
Error: *Ich habe umgezogen.
Correction: Ich bin umgezogen. Umziehen describes a change of location, so it takes sein in the Perfekt.
Error: *Ich möchte verbessern mein Deutsch.
Correction: Ich möchte mein Deutsch verbessern. The infinitive stays at the very end of the clause.
Error: *Mein Bruder hilft mich.
Correction: Mein Bruder hilft mir. Helfen takes a dative object, not an accusative object.
Chapter Summary
Chapter 1 reviewed the case system, the Perfekt, modal verb brackets, and verb-second order through the lens of a personal update. You practiced narrating recent change, stating semester goals, and reading and discussing short learner profiles. No new productive system was activated; Chapter 2 begins Volume II's expansion of dative location expressions and introduces two-way prepositions through the topic of housing.
