Wiederholung 1: Ankommen und Planen

Unit I Assessment · Speak and Write German: Everyday Independence and Connected Communication

Chapter Objectives

Chapter 5 brings together everything Anna and Mia have built over the first four chapters: reintroducing themselves, searching for housing, managing relationships and social plans, and now planning and adjusting a journey. This chapter does not introduce new grammar. Instead, it asks you to combine dative case control, two-way prepositions, modal verbs, separable verbs, and the conventions of practical planning messages in integrated, realistic tasks. Treat this chapter as a checkpoint: a chance to see how much you can already do with German, and a way to identify what still needs practice before Unit II begins.

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  1. Combine housing, relationship, and travel vocabulary in a single connected scenario.
  2. Use dative case forms accurately in indirect objects, dative verbs, and two-way prepositions.
  3. Distinguish motion from location using two-way prepositions in context.
  4. Use modal verbs and separable verbs correctly inside the sentence bracket.
  5. Read and respond to multiple linked practical notices and messages.
  6. Write a clear inquiry and a clear response using appropriate register.
  7. Complete an integrated arrival-and-planning scenario across all four skills.

Opening Scenario

Anna has finally found an apartment she likes and is arranging a viewing before she signs anything. At the same time, she is coordinating with her new neighbor, Frau Bauer, about a shared errand, and finalizing the details of her weekend trip to Leipzig. Mia, meanwhile, is helping a friend who has just arrived in the city and needs advice on getting around. Both situations require you to move fluidly between housing, social planning, and travel language — exactly the combination this chapter assesses.

  1. Read Anna's three linked messages below. Notice how the same dative and two-way preposition patterns from Chapters 2 through 4 appear across completely different topics.
  2. As you move through the chapter, think of this unit review as rehearsal for real situations where housing, relationships, and travel questions often come up in the same conversation or the same day.

Grammar Review — Integrating Unit I Systems

Review — No New Grammar in This Chapter

Consolidating dative case, two-way prepositions, modals, and separable verbs

Chapter 5 does not activate a new grammar system. Instead, it asks you to apply four systems from Chapters 2 through 4 together, in contexts that mix topics the way real communication does. The review cards below organize these systems by chapter of origin so you can check your own control before attempting the guided practice.

Dative Case (Kap. 2–4)

  • indirect objects: Ich gebe der Nachbarin den Schlüssel.
  • dative verbs: helfen, gefallen, gehören
  • location with two-way prepositions: in der Wohnung, am Bahnsteig

Two-Way Prepositions (Kap. 2 & 4)

  • wo? → dative (location): Der Zug ist im Bahnhof.
  • wohin? → accusative (motion): Ich fahre in die Stadt.
  • contracted forms: im, am, ins, zum, zur

Modal Verbs (Kap. 1–4)

  • können, müssen, wollen, sollen in the verb bracket
  • modal + infinitive at clause end: Ich muss die Wohnung besichtigen.

Separable Verbs (Kap. 3 & 4)

  • prefix to final position: Der Bus fährt um acht ab.
  • recycled verbs: vorschlagen, ankommen, abfahren, umsteigen
Review — The Sentence Bracket Across Topics
Anna muss der Nachbarin bei der Besichtigung helfen
"Anna has to help the neighbor with the viewing." — the modal fills position two; the dependent infinitive, carrying the dative verb helfen, moves to the end of the clause.

Diagnostic Practice

  1. Choose dative or accusative: Anna geht in ___ (die/der) Wohnung, um sie zu besichtigen. (motion)
  2. Complete with the correct dative pronoun: Die Nachbarin hilft ___ (ich/mir) mit dem Umzug.
  3. Reorder into a correct sentence: Bahnhof / abholen / Freundin / muss / am / Mia / ihre.
  4. Complete with the correct separable verb form: Mia ___ (vorschlagen) einen neuen Termin ___.
  5. Choose the correct modal form: Wir ___ (können) am Samstag die Wohnung besichtigen.

Model Exchange

Anna writes to her new landlord to confirm a viewing time, then messages her neighbor about a related errand.

Anna schreibt dem Vermieter und dann ihrer Nachbarin.

Anna: Sehr geehrte Frau Roth, vielen Dank für Ihre Nachricht. Ich kann die Wohnung am Samstag um elf Uhr besichtigen. Passt Ihnen die Zeit? Dear Mrs. Roth, thank you for your message. I can view the apartment on Saturday at eleven. Does that time work for you?
Frau Roth: Guten Tag, ja, das passt mir gut. Ich gebe Ihnen dann auch gleich den Schlüssel für die zweite Wohnung. Hello, yes, that works well for me. I'll also give you the key to the second apartment right then.
Anna: Hallo Frau Bauer, ich muss am Samstag zur Besichtigung. Können Sie mir helfen und kurz auf mein Paket warten? Hi Mrs. Bauer, I have to go to the viewing on Saturday. Can you help me and briefly wait for my package?
Frau Bauer: Kein Problem, ich bin sowieso zu Hause. Wenn das Paket ankommt, gebe ich Ihnen sofort Bescheid. No problem, I'm home anyway. If the package arrives, I'll let you know right away.

Comprehension — Model Exchange

1. Wann besichtigt Anna die Wohnung?

2. Was gibt Frau Roth Anna bei der Besichtigung?

3. Worum bittet Anna ihre Nachbarin?

4. Find one dative pronoun and one separable verb in final position.

Listening Assessment

Ask a partner, instructor, or text-to-speech tool to read the following script at a natural pace. Listen once for the general picture, then again for the details.

Eine Nachricht von Frau Roth (Listening Script)

Guten Tag, Frau Anna.

Speaking Assessment

Aktivität 1: Einen Tag koordinieren (Coordinating a Day)

Work with a partner. Partner A is arranging a housing viewing and needs help from a neighbor; Partner B is the neighbor, who has questions and also needs help with a travel plan of their own. Then switch roles.

Partner A — Mieter(in)

  • explain the viewing time and ask for a favor
  • use at least one dative verb or dative pronoun
  • use at least one modal verb

Partner B — Nachbar(in)

  • agree to help and ask a clarifying question
  • mention your own trip using a separable travel verb
  • use at least one two-way preposition

Solo alternative: Record a two-minute message that coordinates a housing viewing, a favor from a neighbor, and a short trip, all in one connected account.

Bewertungshinweise — Speaking Criteria

  • Comprehensible, connected sentences linking at least two Unit I topics.
  • Correct dative case use in indirect objects or dative verbs.
  • Correct modal verb and separable verb placement in the sentence bracket.
  • Correct motion/location contrast where relevant.

Schreiben

Writing Assessment — An Inquiry and a Response

This assessment task asks you to write both sides of a short practical exchange, drawing on housing, relationship, and travel language from Chapters 2 through 4.

  1. Write an inquiry. As Anna, write a short message (four to six sentences) to Frau Roth or Frau Bauer that combines a housing or neighborly request with a travel detail (for example, asking to reschedule because of a trip).
  2. Write a response. As the recipient, write a short reply (three to five sentences) that confirms, clarifies, or proposes an alternative, using at least one dative verb or pronoun.
  3. Use at least one two-way preposition for motion and one for location across the two messages, showing the case contrast clearly.
  4. Use at least one modal verb and one separable verb in a main clause.
  5. Revise using the checklist below.

Checkliste — Editing Checklist:

  • Dative case is used correctly in at least one indirect object or dative verb.
  • Motion and location are distinguished correctly with the accusative and dative.
  • At least one modal verb and one separable verb are placed correctly in the sentence bracket.
  • Verb-second order is consistent in every main clause.
  • All nouns are capitalized; umlauts and ß are used correctly.
  • The register matches the relationship between the writers (formal Sie or informal du, as appropriate).

Culture and Communication

Culture and Communication — Everyday Coordination

Coordinating housing viewings, neighborly favors, and travel plans within the same short exchange is a normal part of everyday life in German-speaking communities, as it is elsewhere. Notice how Anna moves between formal Sie with her landlord and informal du or Sie with her neighbor, depending on the relationship — address choice is not fixed by topic, but by who is speaking to whom.

Regional Note — Clarification Is Expected

In real service and neighborly interactions, asking for clarification — about a time, a location, or a plan — is expected and normal, not a sign of poor language ability. The exchanges in this chapter model that kind of clarification. Practices for confirming details in writing versus by phone vary by region and by individual preference.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Dative pronoun confusion

Error: *Die Wohnung gefällt ich.

Correction: Die Wohnung gefällt mir. The verb gefallen always takes a dative object; the accusative pronoun ich is never correct here.

Separable prefix left in place

Error: *Mia vorschlägt einen neuen Termin.

Correction: Mia schlägt einen neuen Termin vor. In a main clause, the separable prefix moves to the end; it does not stay attached to the finite verb.

Motion/location case confusion under time pressure

Error: *Anna geht in der Wohnung. (intended: motion)

Correction: Anna geht in die Wohnung. When describing movement toward a destination, two-way prepositions take the accusative; this contrast is easy to lose under the pressure of an integrated task, so check it carefully during revision.

Chapter Summary

Chapter 5 integrated the housing, relationship, and travel language from Chapters 2 through 4 without introducing new grammar. You reviewed dative case control, two-way prepositions for motion and location, modal verbs, and separable verbs, and you practiced combining them in realistic messages, conversations, and readings. Chapter 6 moves into a new unit, beginning with education, work, and applications.

You have read and responded to multiple linked practical notices, and you have written and spoken across topics while managing register.

Chapter 6: Ausbildung, Beruf und Bewerbung

Chapter 6 opens Unit II with education, work, and applications. It introduces present perfect with work and study verbs, the simple past of common auxiliaries in written biographies, adjective endings after definite articles, and developed weil clauses, while continuing to recycle the systems consolidated in this chapter.
